To think that Marmite isn't what it used to be?

When I was a child (1970s and 80s) Marmite came in tiny jars and you just needed the smallest smear to get that delicious salty bang.

Nowadays it comes in huge vats and you have to lather on huge amounts.

Is it that I have become de-sensitised; or could it be that it's undergone weak-flation, to make us buy more of it?

So, I declare: Marmite isn't what it used to be. AIBU?

I agree

DH gets this https://www.marmite.co.uk/marmite-xo-is-back.html

TeenToTwenties · 04/06/2026 08:38

I think you are desensitised. I have it occasionally and still need the same amount. You always could get it in large jars as well as small.

WaryCrow · 04/06/2026 08:38

Who cares that stuff is disgusting!

I’ll have to ask the weird members of my family who like it. 😅

update - my weird dh says it’s definitely become easier to spread and he thinks that’s the big difference. There’s a ‘vintage’ variety if you want it. It’s all sticky brown yuck as far as I’m concerned.

Davros · 04/06/2026 08:40

I didn’t find much difference between standard and XO. I’ve still got a small amount of the now rare Truffle Marmite. If anyone finds it, please let me know. I find Marmite the same but the jar lasts so long it’s hard to compare

DappledThings · 04/06/2026 08:41

Always bought the massive jars. My mum's been storing herbs and spices in washed out big ones since the 70s because the dark glass preserves them better so she says.

I think it tastes the same and we buy massive ones because we get through loads of it. Family of 4 marmite lovers!

rurbane · 04/06/2026 08:42

I've wondered this a few times, I remember being able to scrape a tiny amount on and still getting a marmitey hit. Definitely less fierce than it used to be. Softer too so easier to spread, but feels almost watered down. Have they had to cut back on the salt?

Sgtmajormummy · 04/06/2026 08:49

Definitely more runny. I hadn’t been able to buy any in Italy for 2 years but got some recently in the UK. Took it out of the jar on my knife and it fell straight onto my plate.

And how would they make it more runny???
By adding water, of course!

Sgtmajormummy · 04/06/2026 08:50

Double post

SuffolkBargeWoman · 04/06/2026 08:52

Just waiting @MesonBoson
Now the Americans have bought it we'll probably be eating marshmallow flavour Marmite lite!!
And yes, it has definitely changed since the 70s.

Seeline · 04/06/2026 08:53

I made the mistake of buying the squeezy one - thought it would stop all the butter and crumbs being left in the jar. No crumbs, but it definitely wasn't marmite!

FourForksSake · 04/06/2026 08:54

Definitely runnier. I prefer the Aldi version.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one to wonder.

And fierce, that's absolutely the word.

Definitely runnier. I prefer the Aldi version.

Perhaps I am a victim of my brand loyalty.

I'll try Aldi.

Definitely runnier than in the 70 and 80s.
Also, Twiglets are utterly crap now, i don't buy them anymore.

LostMySocks · 04/06/2026 09:10

We eat a lot of marmite. Have always been of the slithering it on type.

New pots are always runny. If you open and leave in the cupboard, for example at the in-laws, then it becomes thicker and sticker.

I know they use yeast from brewing so I wonder if changes to beer preferences influences the overall flavour profile?

Grumpynan · 04/06/2026 09:17

Yes definitely thinner and doesn’t have the same kick to it, still love the stuff but not the same

dont start me on Twiglets, I use to love them they are horrid now DH occasionally has them and I try one convinced that last time was just a bad bag, but no still horrid

I bought a bag of marmite puff from aldi this week thinking they sounded good, horrid no taste at all.

i hate the aldi marmite even thinner and absolutely no kick at all just brown sludge

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 04/06/2026 09:18

Its like ginger beer, when I was a kid two mouthfuls and I was on fire. Now I can chug it like water. Little tongues are much more sensitive.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 04/06/2026 09:20

Also-vegemite is the way to go.(dh disagrees, but hes a philistine)

Elbowpatch · 04/06/2026 09:21

I’m in my 60s and haven’t noticed any change in taste.

Heat makes it more runny. I sometimes zap the jar in the microwave for a few seconds to make it easier to spread.
