Hi
I am very concerned about my 3 year old diet and her refusal to try new food . This is what she eats normally This is what my 3 year old eats Multiple vegetables (including stronger flavors like rocket, beetroot, seaweed, broccoli)

  • Several fruits banana apples strawberries and pears big oranges
  • Different protein sources (chicken, fish cakes, lentils, quorn meatballs , yogurt, nut yogurt)
  • Mixed dishes and sauces (lentil ragù, satay sauce, lasagna) (crunchy with olive oil crackers, soup, hummus, yogurt, toast, celery and fennel , fortified granola with almonds

doesn't eat eggs , cheese or beans and still gag if she eats food that don’t agree with her

She doesn't sound remotely picky? Confused

Stealth boast?

My son eats a less varied diet at 13. Hes fine.

weareallcats · Yesterday 18:05

She eats a lot of different foods op, probably a lot more variety than many 3 year olds. I’ve found as well, that as dc get older they are more open to trying new things that they previously claimed to dislike (for my dc this was things like cheese and mashed potato).

3luckystars · Yesterday 18:05

Oh sorry I read that quickly and thought you said she would not eat seaweed.

That would be a huge problem.

Thanks it just seems to me that she eats small portions but at 3 she already has the body of a 4 year old 😂

Honestly that sounds like a great list for a 3 year old.

Regarding trying new foods - I found DD was more willing to try new things half way through her meal, when she wasn't super hungry any more. Also lunches and weekends were good times. Never when she was tired after nursery. She also tried far more off my plate than her own. She once at most of a saag paneer off my plate having wholesale rejected it the night before!

I wouldn't worry about it and just stay relaxed and keep exposing her to new things.

The gagging thing is worth keeping an eye on though I think. Sorry, I dont have any experience of that (except myself and sadly it's a reflex I never grew out of).

body of a 4 year old? Do you mean she’s overweight?

Gowlett · Yesterday 18:09

Chicken nuggets & pasta here.
Occasionally, mango or melon.

AgnesMcDoo · Yesterday 18:09

That is NOT a picky eater.

She’s doing great. You need to relax.

What 3 year old doesn’t eat chips?

Sirzy · Yesterday 18:11

Your child’s eats a lovely varied diet. Not liking beans and cheese doesn’t make someone very picky.

I have a 16 year old who only eats apples, pears and certain crisps orally. Generally I am very sympathetic to people’s concerns but in this case the important thing is you relax around her eating!

Thanks ☺️ it is just she asks to try new things and then after 1 bite she doesn’t want them anymore and it is such a waste of food

Have you not met many 3 year olds. This is completely normal.

It's quite odd you think she's picky to be honest.

i am not sure but when she asks for food it is always a few bites and that’s it

If it helps she is low energy and could spend an hour sitting at the table playing with me coloring and playing with her figurines so maybe she is not too hungry

In 25 years of working with 3 year olds I’ve come across very few who eat the variety your child does! It’s great that she is willing to take 1 bite of many things, can she maybe just have 1 bite and you eat the rest so you’re not wasting food?

How else can you eat crisps except ‘orally’?

3luckystars · Yesterday 22:14

When you say ‘picky’ do you mean she snacks a lot instead of eating big meals?

To me ‘picky’ means something else entirely.

I wondered that but was too scared of the answer to ask.

Tigresswoods · Yesterday 22:18

I’m here for the eating crisps orally resolution.
