Acid Reflux

LondonTipton99 · 01/06/2026 17:01

ok so my doc has said my acid is no worse than members of the general public, I just wanted to see how common this is

One night last week i had a coke zero and two biscuits between 8-9pm. around 2am i woke up with my throat absolutely burning and I had a ph chip in for reading it and my acid WAS crazy at that time, like very high.

If you drank a coke at this time of the evening and laid flat approx 2 hours later, would this happen to you too?

I've asked members of my family and all have said this wouldn't happen to the

I know this is a weird question btw but just wanted to see how common this is!

I had to go to a doctor 8 times and switch surgeries before they actually took my constant heartburn seriously. I was treated for h pylori. That was years ago, and since then, I have never had heartburn or reflux ever again. I would say, this is your body. If you think it's not normal, trust yourself, and definitely be persistent.

LondonTipton99 · 01/06/2026 17:12

thanks @WorkBreakingMe thing is the rest of my test was pretty "clear" for episodes it was just this one instance that was particularly bad. So I wanted to see if it really was quite common - but everyone I have asked says they would be able to drink the coke and go to sleep flat with no issues!

How old are you if you don't mind me asking? It could be the beginning of perimenopause. Mine started with random reflux. I manage it with a diet change, lots of yogurt and the occasional gaviscon. There are other causes like certain medications etc

Tink3rbell30 · 01/06/2026 17:53

I doubt they all would. That would cause heartburn for me.

That's interesting. Though I think mine is caused by IBS because I only get heartburn when that's playing up. But peri menopause makes IBS worse.

purplepie1 · 01/06/2026 18:15

Yes it would especially if I’d had a large meal earlier in the evening.

go back to your gp and ask for something to help. Then eat and drink earlier in the evening.

LondonTipton99 · 01/06/2026 18:47

@Bpod1 just turned 40 - but I've had it a long time

@Tink3rbell30 and you don't normally suffer with it day to day?

@purplepie1 I've been on omeprazole for 5 years! he wants me to come off. I just wanted to see if this was the norm or not, if that makes sense. Do you normally suffer, if you don't mind me asking?

Yes I've had it amongst other stomach issues for years.

Larrythecatforpm · 01/06/2026 19:18

Yeah it would. I cant drink fizzy drinks at all.

What are your other 'trigger' foods or drink if you don't mind me asking?

Alcohol, cheese, chocolate, onions, anything spicy, too many carbs. It's lots of fun! 🙄 I've had it for years on top of H.pylori (now treated). I also have gastritis and IBS.

Pretty much. I used to take omeprazole religiously to help but it lowered my iron levels and vitamin D.. also might have contributed to getting h.pylori as low acid means bacteria is more likely to multiply.

We have some similarities here....have been on it for five years but in the past month have been put on iron tablets as levels very low.... so what do you take/do now? Or do you just have to really restrict your diet? Sorry for all the qs!

I'm on iron tablets too, it went so low my hair was falling out in clumps. I mentioned to GP and he said "Oh yes, omeprazole can cause vitamin levels to drop". I take Famotidine now instead but only now and again. They are not as "strong" as omeprazole etc. I also take Cyclizine for nausea. And limit what I eat. I have lost a lot of weight so trying to gain it back.

Here’s the thing your doctor won’t tell you because they’re not taught it. A lot of acid reflux is caused by low stomach acid. Why?

Well many who suffer from this use proton pump inhibitor meds (omeprazole etc.) or anti acids like tums. These things stop the production of HCl by the stomach. That is ok for maybe 1-2 days but the human stomach should be extremely acidic like battery acid with a pH of between 1-3.

If the stomach pH becomes more alkali then the little sphincter that sits at the bottom of the food pipe (called the LES) doesn’t close properly so acid can start to flow back up. This is acid reflux.

Low stomach acid is terrible because it means we can’t digest food properly which means digestion breaks down.

Try taking some apple cider vinegar for a few days and maybe Betaine Hydrochloride. This will reacidify your stomach back to how it should be. This knocked my acid reflux out very quickly when I had this a few years back.

Good luck.

BloodandGlitter · 01/06/2026 20:22

I used to have horrible reflux, nearly every day. I took omeprazole pretty much each day but I think in the end the omeprazole was making it worse. I started taking digestive enzymes and only take omeprazole once or twice a month now.

Thanks both, there’s some things for me to have a look into there, which is always good as I know I’m going to have to try and help myself!
