To not think someone is in the same crisis

If they have multiple incidents of self harm etc over a nearly four week period. As it seems a big time frame to still be the same crisis?

Four weeks isn’t very long. I mean, if whatever it is that is driving this has brought them to the point of multiple instances of self-harm, I’d assume that they haven’t just bounced back from whatever the original crisis was.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 01/06/2026 15:09

Why would you think that?

If someone is self harming then they clearly are in a very bad place. Four weeks is nothing.

Larrythecatforpm · 01/06/2026 15:10

Yeah i would assume it’s the same crisis.

Are you saying that someone who has reached the point of self harming should be better within 4 weeks?

Quincy2381 · 01/06/2026 15:14

Four weeks isn’t very long at all… many mental health episodes can last many months. The crisis aspect I suppose is how you interpret it, however, I’ve seen it start and build over days or weeks. I think some people think it’s a 24 hour of intense feeling thing and it really isn’t.

Darragon · 01/06/2026 15:15

Why are you asking this again a week later? If someone is in a crisis they need help. 111 option 2?

XenoBitch · 01/06/2026 15:16

Self harming does not always mean someone is in crisis. Some people use it as a way to avoid them... it is a coping mechanism for them.

Sahara123 · 01/06/2026 15:17

Does it actually matter how long or how many episodes of crisis, they’re clearly in a bad place and need help. I didn’t reach the point of self harm but was in a very bad place around 18 months ago. Went on for many months. I’ve never felt so scared and alone.

Dermatologically · 01/06/2026 15:17

I don't understand. Why does it matter? If they're self harming then they're clearly going through some stuff they can't cope with in a healthy way. Who cares whether it needs to be neatly filed and labelled under 'same crisis' or 'new crisis'. How would that help them?

That is true, too.

I thinks that's for the person experiencing it to determine if they have capacity to do so. Maybe they have felt the same way for 4 weeks, so it's not a crisis to them but an ongoing issue. Maybe they are only self-harming when they reach crisis point and they feel out of control when they do it, so are in crisis.

Jesus H what a stupid post.

Pedantry instead of empathy: what the fuck does it matter how you describe someone’s suffering? They’re suffering - that’s all you need to worry about.

Every person and their illness is unique.
