To hate my pale skin?

I am so pale I’m translucent. You can see pretty much all of my veins on my shoulders, thighs, arms. Basically everywhere. I’m as white as a ghost.

I don’t tan. Last summer I went to a Formula One race and I was in the sun for ten hours a day, two days running. I didn’t even get burnt. Just stayed the same colour. Yesterday I went to a BBQ, and burnt in the sun that was out for about two hours. It just doesn’t make sense!

I don’t pick up any colour. Fake tan looks odd on me because I don’t have undertones - it’s just white. But it’s also not the beautiful pale that a lot of women on social media have. It’s just deathly, sallow pale. I hate it.

I’m super pale too. I wear spf 50 every single day from April -November. Regardless of whether cloudy etc because I would burn in 10 minutes.
after years of fake tan, spray tan, brown stains on all my clothes and sheets, smelling of tan, and grass is always greener etc
I have embraced my Celtic looks now and ditched the lot of them. I now even love my freckles. Incidentally the Irish word for freckles is pógíní gréine- which means “little kisses from the sun”
i tell my three redhead sons this every day, and to be proud of their skin and their heritage.

I've never looked to see if there was a whole body tinted moisturizer but surely there's something along those lines. I empathise, I'm quite pale myself but luckily I tan quite easily really.

I think the only thing is fake tan, but I’ve not found one that works for me yet

I too am 'blessed' with v pale see through skin. I used to hate it when I was younger, ive never found a fake tan that doesn't make me look like i need a good wash. Now im older im appreciating the fact that ive had to cover up with f50 anytime the sun is out. The friends who used to gently take the mic out of my ghostly limbs are now jealous of how I look a good 5 years younger then they do.
One thing I do to make me look a bit more alive is wear a pink cream blusher to make my face look brighter and always moisturise my skin so at least it looks healthier. Solbari is a good company that makes clothing with added spf to prevent burning too.

Lemonymint · 01/06/2026 08:59

I live in a country with very high UV levels. Visitors don't realise that cloudy days are really lethal in terms of sunburn. My olive skinned mother and pale father spent the day at the beach when they settled here thinking they were safe because it was overcast. They were burnt so badly they spent two days in agony, bedbound and unable to eat. I'm not saying you should stay indoors and miss events but you have to take sensible precautions like sunblock, some form of hat and sunglasses. You can easily burn through cloud cover.

I’m over 70 now and my skin is v white - I’m looking for a soft liquid blusher type of thing - that I can add to moisturiser - just to warm the colour a bit. Something bigger than the tiny bottles you get.
Fake tan looks a bit yellowy

Sounds a bit dramatic for some sunburn

Try the Bondi Sands gradual tanner in the blue bottle - I'm glow in the dark white but a few days of that and I've actually got some plausible colour in my legs now.

As a kid I once burned so badly that my skin literally formed big fluid-filled blisters. Nothing dramatic about it - sunburn can be BRUTAL. I can tolerate the sun for about two minutes before burning - factor 50 every day for me.

raisinglittlepeople12 · 01/06/2026 09:36

We’re in the bodies we’ve got, so you may as well embrace it. I understand how you feel. I went to Australia for a month, came back and my mum (who had been in cloudy wales) was substantially darker than me haha

MegMortimer · 01/06/2026 09:39

Another with awful pale skin here. Please don't go into the sun without loads of protection, OP. I had/have melanoma because I was being careful but not careful enough. No one ever thinks they will get cancer - until they do.

I know you said you weren't keen but I use Dove tinted body moisturiser, the light coloured one. Only use a small amount at one time and massage it into legs and arms gently for ages. I find it works quite well, just takes off the milk bottle white. Smells nice too.

ScruffMuffin · 01/06/2026 09:48

YANBU, but I am the same and have decided to love it. I cannot tan at all, and also burn quickly and horribly if I'm not exceptionally careful. I think I had the palest legs on the whole beach last week, so that's a flex of some sort!

I think the fact that there's absolutely no prospect of even slight tanning has made me shrug my shoulders and embrace it. I did buy a fake tanning cream in my early 20s, and my husband laughed at me! He was right though... it just wasn't 'me'.

I don't have any wrinkles yet at nearly 50, so I guess that's a perk?

Rockty · 01/06/2026 09:52

Lots of would burn if out for two hours and don’t tan at all, so it’s not that unusual. There are literally hundreds of fake tans, body make up, in all different tones on the market. If you can’t live with being pale just find one that suits you. This is something you can change if you’re not happy, just takes a bit of time and effort.

Missymarple · 01/06/2026 09:54

You have two choices when you're that pale - spend time, money and effort trying to get your skin to do what it doesn't want to do, or just accept it.

I am so pale I look blue, my spending on sunscreen is always going to be high so considering adding the cost of fake tan/gradual tanner on top was never really an option for me. Plus I couldn't be arsed with the upkeep.

Twinklefeet · 01/06/2026 10:31

Hi op im the same i look like casper with ears.
But tbh i have come to love my skin.
While others are rubbing chemicals in their skin, and ageing with the sun, my skin is healthy and youthful.
I only use E45 in my skin.

It was the same with my hair thick cork screw hair i love it, when others start thining hair because off the crap they put in it i`ll still have plenty on my head.

Ive had friends and others say oh get out in the sun, you need to get a fake tan you look like a ghost.

Im a few months from 40 and look younger than the lot of them.
Even they have said it i wish i had your skin.

Now they are trying to cover up in the sun and stop rubbing chemicals in their skin, but the damage is done.

Jamesblonde2 · 01/06/2026 11:01

Please try fake tan. Go and have a spray tan. Look for local recommendations. You WILL feel loads better. Some people get them done weekly (I do not).

If someone doesn’t like something about themselves, if it can be changed, that is sometimes easier than being forced to accept it.

I can’t stand curly hair. Mine is dealt with and I look so much better with a smooth blowdried doo.

Queenie678 · 01/06/2026 11:07

Does anyone have any recommendations for products that cover up all the visible green/blueish veins some of us get on arms, chest and legs with such pale skin? I’m not after looking more tanned, just having more flawless skin would be a bonus

OneDaringGreenBiscuit · 01/06/2026 22:57

The sun is most dangerous in the early season and when it seems cloudy. When it's cloudy in winter the rays are further away in summer they are nearer. I have very pale skin and also suffer from PMLE, which in effect is an allergy to the sun. Its worse in spring and if I am sensible I make sure my exposure to the sun is is increased gradually, to prevent bad outbreaks. Usually unless I am very careless by middle of summer I don't suffer so much. Which illustrates the danger from the sun is not straight forward in terms of if it's in or out or very hot or not so hot.

Tink3rbell30 · 01/06/2026 23:27

Have you tried having a spray tan?

TheBirdintheCave · 01/06/2026 23:32

I am this colour too and, after about ten disastrous years through my teens and early twenties attempting to change it, eventually accepted that this is just what my skin looks like. I know it’s not considered conventionally beautiful but I’m ok with that now.

Applewisp · 01/06/2026 23:38

What is wrong with people being brainwashed to hate their own ethnic features. Pale is beautiful. The media and other factors are making white people hate themselves in so many ways. And especially white women are being manipulated into believing they need fake tan, dark hair dye, lip fillers, butt implants to mimic the ethnic features of other races. Your racial characteristics are beautiful. We fair folk are the global minority. If we don’t start valuing our ethnic features and choose partners who share ethnic characteristics, we will die out. We are already dramatically in danger of dying out.

DivinePineapples · 01/06/2026 23:58

I have very pale skin the same as you OP and I absolutely hate it - especially on my face.

I have been using Garnier Ambre for the past 10 years and it’s a spray that develops into a really natural tan and is even and has no colour or smell. They used to sell it for £3.99 in home bargains now I have to get it from amazon, I wait until it’s on offer and stock up.
It lasts a few days then fades naturally so I keep it topped up for a little while then scrub it all off and start again.

I use M. Asam Magic on my face when the fake tan has developed (they do a face spray with the ambre solaire) and it gives me a natural glow and hides any flaws and imperfections.

Bondi Sands do a fake tan mask called “Technocolor” that comes in different shades for face tones and that also leaves a very natural glow, I use it on top of the spray once or twice a week.
That sounds like a lot but it takes a lot to build a colour up on such pale skin and I just end up with a light golden glow, I’m not into the deep tanned look with orange undertones!

I’ve been wearing fake tan for so long that people get a shock when they see me without it and usually think I’m at deaths door for looking so pale. I went on holiday with a friend I’ve known for years and chlorine from the pool kept stripping my tan off and she was amazed to realise how pale I actually really am, even my mum got a shock when she saw me without it for the first time in years and said she’d forgotten my natural skin colour 😂.

If I can get away with people thinking it’s natural for years then it makes it worth the effort and expense because I hate feeling so pale and pasty but don’t want any sun damage on my skin.

If you do try the ambre Solaire then just be careful with your feet and cover them up after the first application. The colour sticks to them really well so you will probably need to keep reapplying everywhere else to keep it up but you don’t want to end up with black feet, at least if that does happen it scrubs off easily.
