To think not every film has to be absolute cinema?

I recently saw that St Trinians has been added to Netflix. I remember loving it as a teen so I thought I’d give it a watch. I enjoyed it for what it is, an easy going and pleasant watch about something a bit silly. I then read the reviews and saw how poorly it is received online.

a lot of the reviews seem to say that it’s too silly or that the girls ensemble is just stupid and it’s an awful film etc etc etc.

don’t get me wrong, it’s absolutely not cinema and it’s hardly going to win an Oscar, but it’s an enjoyable and easy watch like lots of films!

it then got me thinking that this genre of film (in my head that’s things like Wild Child, Angus Thongs etc) seem to have died a death! It’s like people don’t enjoy a silly film anymore.

I actually often find largely critically acclaimed films to be really boring or hard to watch (e.g. I hated Gladiator and I left the cinema in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). These are considered fantastic pieces of work and are well reviewed but I didn’t like them.

Aibu to think that not all films have to be this stellar piece of filmmaking and can just be a bit fun and goofy?

I agree that not every film has to leave a huge emotional impression on the viewer. There’s definitely a place for easy watching, non challenging films but I think there’s tonnes of these out there. In fact, most films are just so so hence why the masterpieces or hidden gems really stand out; of course with the usual degree of subjectivity.

Very rarely do I watch a film and rate it an 8 / 10 or above.

I think there’s lots of simplistic films out there, but not so many goofy ones if that makes sense? For example, in the cinema at the moment is The Mandalorian and Grogu, now no one thinks that’s going to be the film of the year. But it’s still “serious” and an action film. There just aren’t many original silly films any more (that aren’t directly for young children!)

I just watched one last night called ‘Ladies First’ which was very goofy & stupid but also pretty terrible. I wouldn’t recommend it.

I see these films all the time and sometimes they are decent for nights when we don’t want anything that requires much attention.

AI will likely start churning out these types of films so it’ll become even harder to find a gem.

I think most films that win big awards are absolute wanky crap.

I enjoy some of them but I do also often share this opinion 🤣 I can’t say I enjoyed many of the recent best picture winners!
