AIBU to feel exasperated with these horrible nits?!

My 9 year old daughter got nits for the first time 2 weeks ago.
We used Hedrin and then combed out a good number of adult life and loads of eggs.
I then did the wet conditioner and combing daily for a week, spending an hour a day section by section. Satisfyingly fewer and fewer each day.
Repeated Hedrin 7 days later and continued with the combing every other day getting very little but still the odd egg or dead nymph.
It’s now day 14 - I just thought I had completed our first clear comb and was about to rejoice. Dragged it through one more time for luck and I caught a very young louse but it was alive 😩😩😩
AIBU to feel exasperated here?! This is just relentless isn’t it? I feel like I have been so fastidious and yet I am still finding them.

Anything else anyone can advise me? Hedrin again? Should I still be combing daily? Is there something else I should do? I feel like if I stop I may miss something and the whole cycle will restart?

Did you treat everyone in the household?

Yes sorry I should’ve said. Treated all of us. I combed mine too for a week but I didn’t have any. I’ve also been tightly plaiting her hair for school and spraying with vosene. She’s been off for half term this week. I don’t think she’s caught fresh ones as no adults. It feels like some eggs were missed and have hatched. Though I had hoped Hedrin would’ve stopped that.

Sounds like you’re doing all the right things, you’ll just have to keep going with the combing.

Awful things. We had our experience with them for the first time this year as well. Treated my child and all the family with Hedrin 5 min solution, combed the hair well. Washed all bedding, got new pillows and put teddies in bin liner for a week.

Only the one child had lice thankfully, we treated every 3-4 days with Hedrin to catch any eggs laying and combed daily in between for 2 weeks. That was a few months ago and we’ve not had them back.

Ime Asda /Tesco give the stuff free o
If you show them a nit!!. And hair tied up and hair spray works to keep the fuckers off...

Thank you. I think I should do one more Hedrin since I found a live one. Maybe I’ve just been naive about how hard they are to get rid of.

We had this, it took about 2 weeks to stop finding them. I went a bit crazy with bedding and boil washed it most days when I’d found them. Also soft toys. You can bag them up as the lice would die after a few days without blood. It’s such a pain!

Mummyboy1 · 30/05/2026 20:57

We used this one and also the mousse, both the same type. Simply sprayed it, followed the directions, washed it out a day or so later. Then did ut again about 5/6 days later and that was it.

Nit Wits! Hedrin did nothing. One treatment of Nit Wits and we were fine. Way easier to comb through too

radioX · 30/05/2026 21:01

Hairspray !

Tequilamockinbird · 30/05/2026 21:02

It’s been a while since I’ve dealt with nits, but I still remember the horrendous and endless combing etc. once you’ve got rid of them, I’d recommend tea tree shampoo and conditioner to stop them coming back. Or even just a few drops of tea tree oil - apparently lice don’t like tea tree!

Watercooler · 30/05/2026 21:05

I would switch products using something other than hedrin if that's not working. I've heard straightening can also help as it pops the eggs (gross!)

JustinesGraspingAvarice · 30/05/2026 21:08

When mine had nits (3 of them) the best thing was cheap veg oil in the hair for an hour and then comb them out. Repeat every other night for a week, then every other week throughout primary.
I found secondary school it wasn't such an issue, but i did still check once a month.

Edit: Just to add, don't bother with the chemical expensive stuff as the little bastards get immune from it. The cheap oil suffocates them.

Iocanepowder · 30/05/2026 21:09

We’ve had it in both kids at nursery who also passed them onto me.

I generally read that most other brands work better than hedrin. But we also got the nitty gritty comb and we do the conditioner comb through straight after doing the chemical treatment.

Lamarais · 30/05/2026 21:16

Thank you everyone. Was expecting a pile on telling me I wasn’t doing enough! We have the nitty gritty comb. I will look at Nitwits as I did hear that one was good.

The nitty gritty comb is the only fine tooth comb that works.
treat everyone in the house and hot wash bedding pillows and hats /hair accessories etc.
switch it up and treat with other treatments apart from Hedrin. I had to use hedrin and lyclear on alternate weeks with daily fine tooth combing on both my boys for about 3 -4weeks. Apparently lice are becoming resistant to treatments 🤮 grim
