AIBU to think others get a physical jolt in the abdomen?

AIBU to think I can’t be the only person who experiences this??? Family and friends never seem to understand what on earth I’m talking about / describing??!!

If I have some kind of shock/surprise eg a loud noise or drop something etc it’s a physical sensation that moves quickly through my abdomen vertically. Not a pain but close to be a pain if that makes sense ? A loud bang can make me ‘jump’ but also I get this feeling every time?

I think everyone thinks I’m mad but it’s a completely physical feeling that’s bordering on pain so a strong feeling but not quite there to be actually painful?

I’ll look it up - I’m just starting to feel a bit embarrassed that nobody I know seems to have a clue what I’m referring to! MIL dropped a glass today and asked why on earth I gasped and grabbed my stomach but it was such a strong reaction ? It’s happened to me my whole life and takes a few minutes for me to feel normal again after

If I see someone I really care about, hurt (even a small graze) I get a physical sensation from my stomach right down the back of my legs! Every time I wonder if other people experience this?!

Dilbertian · 30/05/2026 19:17

I get exactly that if I get a fright like a near-miss at speed while driving on the motorway. At the same time - and this is the only time it ever happens - the hair on my forearms and the backs of my hands stands up so suddenly and sharply that it hurts, feels like being waxed!

fandjango · 30/05/2026 19:17

I get this! no one understands. I am in constant fight or flight which may make it worse but it often makes me also feel nauseous

EnigmaTime · 30/05/2026 19:22

At least it’s not just me I was worrying something was wrong with me !! It’s a horrible feeling

my knees fizz op. If I am shocked or surprised. They kind of tingle! It’s weird!

I get this. It's really sore.

Yes to the op, that horrid lurch feeling, and yes to this! Also chest ache if I hear something sad or painful for someone, like a sad story from their childhood when they felt hurt or humiliated or something.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 30/05/2026 19:40

People say ‘like a punch to the gut’, or ‘my stomach dropped’.
There are loads of nerves in the gut- like a second brain. You are processing things that way.

Petrolitis · 30/05/2026 19:43

Ive only had this a couple of times both when I thought id seriously fucked up at work, fortunately wrong on both occasions but it is a truly horrid feeling.

If I bump myself or stub my foot i always get a massive pins and needles shock in my face. Most unpleasant and never found anyone else with similar!

Thingsthatgo · 30/05/2026 19:45

If I hear a noise that makes me jump as I’m drifting off to sleep, I see a very bright flash. It’s so weird.

I get this! So weird, and only when driving.

StMichaelPenkevil · 30/05/2026 19:46

I know exactly what you mean and I was told that it is adrenaline. It happens at sudden noises, shocks etc. Like a previous poster, I am in constant flight or fight so am very (annoyingly) jumpy.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 30/05/2026 19:51

Yes I get it quite frequently.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 30/05/2026 19:52

For me it's not a stomach drop, i feel this is slightly different like a sinking feeling or dread. If it's a surprise or shock it's like a low quick punch in the lower abdomen and the pain or after effect can stay for a while. If I am going through a stressful period in life it's much worse than when my well being is generally good. For example if I'm driving and someone suddenly beeps the punch happens, I quickly realise it's nothing to do with me but the pain or tension lingers. I take some deep slow breaths and it goes away.

BlessedAreThePureOfHeart · 30/05/2026 21:37

I get this as well, it's why I hate people making me jump because it actually physically hurts.

Also if someone hurts my feelings I actually feel the hurt in my chest and it goes all down my left arm and makes my left hand hurt. If it's really bad I lose the strength in my hand momentarily.

If something bad happens I never cry I'm just numb but happy things make me cry my eyes out! If I laugh a lot I start crying!
I think I'm just wired up weirdly..

Drivingselfmad · 30/05/2026 21:39

Tingles down my arms for me. I guess it’s adrenaline as pps have said?

WhitstablePearl · 30/05/2026 21:49

Mine is sometimes in my stomach and sometimes in my heart. I have always assumed it is adrenaline.

Nerves/adrenaline also send my colon into overdrive. Sorry if TMI
