UTI in four year old?

For the last day or so dd has been complaining of pain when weeing and also itching down there a lot. No other signs of illness (fever etc) and her wee isn’t more frequent or cloudy/strong smelling.

She is suffering badly with hay fever and eczema at the moment which has literally just begun with the hot weather. I don’t know if the two things could be linked.

I will get her seen next week when GP reopens but does this sound typical of a UTI or could it just be general irritation? One thing is I bought some of those scent booster beads recently which I’ve not used before but no other new products.

Thrush maybe? My four year old had it (think my washing machine wasn’t rinsing properly).

I get very anxious when she’s sick in any well. She doesn’t appear unwell in herself (although her skin and eyes are a mess thanks to hay fever) but just mentioning pain made me think UTI.

Could be, are the glands in her groin up? Don’t worry though if she’s well enough in herself.

Might possibly be vulvovaginitis, but worth excluding UTI.

No not that I’ve noticed and she says it’s the skin on the outer part that hurts not her stomach or urethra but it’s hard to get an accurate description from a 4 year old.

Why would you wait another 2 days with a child who's experiencing pain and itchiness? Phone your Out Of Hours GP (I work for one and we always get calls for things like this) or NHS 111. Or what about a local walk in centre? Another 2 days of a UTI in hot weather can mean it gets worse quickly. Poor girl. Please get her seen to.

If it persists or worsens I will. The reason I haven’t before now is because she doesn’t seem unwell within herself.

I would bet it's the scent boosters. Best not to use extra fragrances when washing underwear especially.

My girl can't even use bubble bath without getting irritated.

Me and dd both have eczema and I wouldn’t touch scent boosters with a 10ft pole. Id bet money it’s that and would be rewashing everything in something very gentle

Yes lesson learnt regarding those although I’m wondering if the heat and sun cream could have contributed too. Really don’t know, just don’t want it to be anything that gets worse. I will keep a close eye.

I don't understand why you'd risk waiting until the (potential) infection takes hold before your seek help. She's got symptoms of UTI. The point at which she actually starts feeling ill with it is an unnecessary step too far. Are you putting off getting it sorted early because of your anxiety and you don't want to acknowledge it might be something more than scent boosters?

Regardless of cause, she's in pain when urinating and that needs treatment of some sort. If her skin around her urethra is inflamed or sore due to scent boosters it'll be more susceptible to infections anyway. Antihistamine cream and/or steroid cream could help her so much even if she doesn't warrant abx. Another 36 hours of it isn't fair. You don't want her trying to hold wees in to avoid the burn. Please get her seen to.

Its probably the heat too. If she can sleep or spend time without any bottoms on I would try that

I appreciate your concern but I know my child. I know signs of illness. While she has complained about stinging while weeing this could be down to a number of things and it only started late on yesterday. I have used sudocrem because the area she’s pointing to that hurts is the outer part. I think calling 111 at this stage when there are no signs of illness and a few home remedies I can try first is overkill personally (and I say that as someone who is anxious about their dc health). Rest assured if this persists or worsens tomorrow I will get her seen.

There are lots of other things it could be than a UTI.

You asked if it was symptoms of a UTI. It is. Until a few months ago I'd been a clinical scientist for 26 years and I'm suggesting you get it checked TODAY before it has chance to get systemic and make her 'ill'. You're choosing not to. I'd rather be safe than sorry, but hey, you do you.

smallsilvercloud · 30/05/2026 22:36

I would get it checked out asap, uti in a child can cause damage to the kidneys.
