I went to the dentist Tuesday for deep clean (I get one every 6 months). Anyway, I’m not sure what has happened but the gum around my wisdom tooth has become exceptionally, exceptionally sore. Genuinely I’d rather give birth than deal with this any longer. The wisdom tooth is bottom left and partially erupted, we have discussed removing due to this previously but because of the nerves in that area and the fact the tooth is healthy we have opted not too. Weirdly my tooth doesn’t feel sore at all but the gum is torture.

Has anyone ever had this? Typically I’d go to the dentist to see what was wrong but I’m assuming he’s nicked the gum maybe when cleaning so imagine waiting it out is the only option but I am in SO mich pain. I can barely open my mouth (can enough to take mini bites and drink though). Swallowing is torture. Cocodamol and ibuprofen isn’t taking the edge off.

Sounds like an infection. Can you source an emergency dentist. Google it to find out what is on offer.

NHS 111 might have some information. I had infection around a similar wisdom tooth and although it was 40 odd years ago I remember the pain very well.

Gargling with hot salt water might help a tiny bit but you probably need antibiotics.

good luck

Get the wisdom tooth removed it will become infected, I had all four out it was fine and less cleaning to do. They’re a pain!

I've got a bottom wisdom that's hurting because I think there's an infection underneath it. So tooth itself doesn't hurt but gums around do. My dentist x rayed it last week.

Yours could be just inflamed from the deep clean though. But ultimately a misaligned wisdom is only going to damage the tooth in front and it's too difficult to keep clean so they'll probably take it out eventually.

I'm probably getting mine and the one above out next week. If it's wobbly it probably won't take much to remove. And they totally numb you so you just feel pressure/pulling a bit but zero pain.

Please don't worry. Ultimately we don't need our wisdom teeth and they are nearly always more trouble than they're worth. Something like 85% of people have at least one removed. It helps keep your mouth cleaner.

Contact the dentist and tell them. I’d expect them to check what’s happened for free because it’s their work.

Pansykavalier · 30/05/2026 14:51

Get him to remove the wisdom tooth.

FelicityBennett · 30/05/2026 15:24

I sometimes get something similar . Speak to the dentist but whilst waiting try corsadyl mouthwash or corsadyl toothpaste rubbed over the sore area

AzureLurker · 30/05/2026 16:26

This and some clorhexidine containing mouthwash

Tunnocks34 · 31/05/2026 15:38

Thanks all,

Been to the out of hours dentist. Have an absesss in the gum, likely because of bacteria entering during the deep clean, so have been given antibiotics. This dentist said even now, a removal isn’t advised unless I suffer this recurrently.

So for now I am just alternating cocodamol and iburprofen whilst waiting for the anti biotics to work. Have also ordered the reccomended mouthwash!

@Tunnocks34 if you gargle with salt water 3 or 4 times a day it will help draw out the puss which will give you immediate relief from the pain.
This was the best piece of advice I was given by a dentist whilst waiting for my wisdom tooth to be removed

I am going to make a dental appointment with my own dentist this week to discuss removing it moving forward I think. Last time he said that the tooth was healthy and causing no issues so it didn’t seem worth it given how complex lower wisdom teeth removals can be but honestly dealing with this only once has been enough.

I had an eating disorder as a teenager (fully recovered) but my teeth suffered with all the vomiting so I am so so careful now so keep them healthy as when I was recovering my enamel was a mess and I needed 6 fillings.

The lower wisdom teeth are extremely close to the main facial nerves that control the ability to smile and feel most of ech side of your face.
Even with all the care and skill possible everytime a lower wisdom tooth is removed you risk damaging the nerve so they only remove them in hospital and only if they are chronically infected or severely impacted

Nat6999 · 31/05/2026 22:25

Hot salt rinses, Oragel for pain relief, you could also get a child's medicine syringe & squirt the salt water directly around the tooth, or you could mix Corsordyl with warm water & use that. Use heat on your jaw to encourage it to push the infection out.

YourOliveBalonz · 01/06/2026 05:26

I’ve had this and one wisdom tooth out so far (I would love both gone but it’s quite a procedure and I had dry socket last time…trying to keep the remaining one infection free so I don’t have to do it). Disagree with a pp though; your dentist will need to x-ray but will most likely be able to do it themselves under local. Mine took about about an hour to get out though shudders

Agree with salt water rinses, you would also do those post extraction if you do get it removed. Corsodyl (original) works too but it will stain teeth, and I’m sure you don’t want to rush back to the hygienist! I think warm salt water is the best thing.

In the US, all four wisdom teeth are routinely removed in late teens. Obviously this needs to be done by an oral surgeon, not a regular dentist.

Rituelec · 01/06/2026 07:08

Be careful with corsodyl as it stains teeth.

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/06/2026 07:42

Keep an eye on it. I have a partially erupted lower wisdom tooth and it sometimes it gets irritated or infected. Once it got so bad I ended up with acute necrotising gingivitis. Which is as bad as it sounds.
