I appreciate that I’ll be flamed for even having the apps (and be told I can just scroll by) but I am genuinely astonished at grown adults (some with quite grown up teenaged children) doing a (for example) 5 family dance routine or a couple filming themselves miming to a song while chasing each other round a room or some such.
I love the internet and social media. I’m genuinely agog that there are entire families who for want of a better word ‘go along’ with what I assume is one family members idea to get followed on the internet.

what am I missing here? How much money is there in it? Are you someone who’s in these type of videos and if so ‘why? Do you enjoy it?’
I am not being snarky but am trying to understand (my children and partner would rather die, as would I)

It's just a bit of fun, isn't it?

patooties · 29/05/2026 23:57

Is it? I really don’t know - there’s a lot of it - I suppose I’m just surprised that so many people think random strangers want to watch them performing the shoop shoop song with their kids.

In the old days it was called 'showing off'. SM like that is utter brain rot, seek out the things you like/excite/intrigue you instead of being fed that durge.

My dog has 40,000 followers on Tik Tok.
He's loved by people all over the world.
Millions of views, but not monetised.
I love Tik Tok, especially DogTok, but I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than upload myself dancing or talking shite

family doing something silly together

of all the things to get offended by, really?

It started during the lockdown, obviously. I am amazed people still do it, but it doesn't hurt or embarrass anyone, what could be the big deal here?

Money is made

I’ve never put my face or any personal info on Insta or TikTok but my dogs accounts have a large following like @Mistymaglets. I don’t monetise it either and I’m not in creator funds or anything like that but I have been approached by various brands asking me to collab with them which I’ve never done. Some of these brands offer serious money but the terms and conditions are crazy. I’d never dance or anything on it but if people like doing that sort of thing that’s up to them.

What does unsettle me is “creators” posting their children, especially children with SEN having meltdowns to “raise awareness”, that doesn’t sit right with me. There’s one in particular who does it all the time when her views are falling, horrible woman.
