AIBU to refuse extra shipping costs after paying online?

Hi, I ordered online from a small independent shop, and free shipping was calculated. Owner of the shop then emails and asks for almost £100 extra in shipping to receive the item. This is obviously illegal as I've already paid for the item!

Anyone else been through this? I messaged back saying I would not provide further payment so either I would request a chargeback or receive the item at the agreed upon price. They didn't reply...

Are you sure their email has not been compromised and it’s not a scam? I’m pretty confident they’re not allowed to change the price after purchase without the option of cancellation.

You should have asked for a refund instead of threatening to request a chargeback. They may well have been happy to do so. Now they aren’t going to refund you in case you do a chargeback and leave them out of pocket. Your best option might be to request a refund and reassure them that you don’t intend to initiate a chargeback. If they refuse…. Then initiate a chargeback.

I think it sounds a bit dodgy to be honest. If the small print says something about 12th floor apartments or limited access then they can be justified in requesting more for delivery. If you live on a Scottish Island that would be caught in your postcode so no reason to request more money. If you live in a regular home with normal access then it's very suspicious to request an extra delivery payment.

I would ask for a refund - even if it were more expensive to deliver, you weren't told that before checkout. Asking after by email isn't acceptable.

Update, they said it was a mistake on their system and the full shipping should have been calculated at checkout (although clearly they knew it hadn't as they emailed asking for additional costs...)

Offered to send it with the additional fees or cancel the order, so I told them to cancel.

Shame as it was a really nice vintage item and I loved the shop (until now!) but I wasn't going to be blatantly ripped off

Yeah that’s quite normal then. You’re a bit silly to think furniture would be delivered for free

They're not silly for thinking that if it says free delivery at checkout that she would suddenly incur a delivery charge after everything has gone through the checkout and payment has been made. I'm pretty sure their obliged to make the shipping costs know up front.
