AIBU to worry about children without hats or shade in hot weather

Is anyone else concerned about the number of children and babies out and about with no head coverings or shade in this incredibly hot weather?
would you say anything?

I have an 8 month old, I slather him in suncream but this is abit like when older ladies worry about babies with no socks on, I’m sorry.. I try.. but he will not keep the hat on his head for more than 1 second

chatgptmeup · 28/05/2026 17:31

I live in a hot climate and as long as my children are wearing suncream all over and have it with them to reapply then they are just fine. Hats are great too when they'll put them on. They haven't come home sunburned yet.

Re. coverings, my friend's baby stopped breathing because she was napping covered in a muslin cloth in the heat, thank god for paramedics who saved her.Covering babies too much can actually be really dangerous in this weather.

Twisterlollies · 28/05/2026 17:31

Please use mineral suncream on your precious babies and toddlers everyone!

How are people keeping hats on their toddlers? Asking for me

Hard relate. My 4yo son lives in his hat, but my 2yo daughter refuses to wear it. She's happy to wear sun cream and sun glasses but the hat just gets thrown straight back in my face :) if anyone sees us out and about and she's not wearing a hat, mind ya business. Cannot believe there are some people who would confrontationally ask another parent things like why their child isn't wearing a hat. It has absolutely nothing to do with you, unless they are obviously in immediate danger and about to die from heat exhaustion.

Our non compliant child wore hats that were tied on. Simple.

@BrightonBelle1992 i would probably say something if it was clear the child was suffering. I've certainly chucked suncream on plenty of random kids backs on holiday, it always amazes me how many adults just sit round the pool bar and abandon their kids then moan they're sick!

Our dd15 is away doing her dofe practice walk and I'm worrying like hell about her, she really suffers in the heat, got sunstroke last year in much cooler weather, hoping the paths have enough shade. She had set an alarm for every 20 mins to reapply suncream.

You put suncream on random kids you don't know? What if they were allergic? There's a reason schools and nurseries ask for permission and schools get the kids to do it themselves.

Factor 50 lasts longer than 20 minutes also.

Backedoffhackedoff · 28/05/2026 17:38

I can’t say I’d be worried. My children don’t wear hats in the uk

Familyandmore · 28/05/2026 17:39

SovietSpy · 28/05/2026 16:19

Same!

Op you may see no hat, but there's probably a parent with that child that has tried a million times and given up.

My immediate thoughts!

ToffeePennie · 28/05/2026 17:41

Yeah my 8 year old adhd kid just cannot keep a hat on his head. Even tried the tied ones, he still lost it.
I just don’t let my kids out during the hottest part of the day, slap loads of suncream on them before they do go outside in it and make sure they have plenty of fluid when they come home.
Also I can’t force my autistic 11 year old to wear a hat since his old beanie was destroyed by a dog - he won’t touch anything else on his head. So what am I supposed to do?

Duck tape but im sure they would get that off, toddlers are craffty little things.

If you put sun cream on my “random child” you could kill her due to allergies. Keep your hands off other people’s kids!!!

Tinytwinle · 28/05/2026 17:50

Their is always going to be someone that finds something to moan about.
Kids with screens.
Kids to loud out side.
Kids with no hats.
Walking dogs in the sun even if its late in the evening.
Walk your dog take dog out your dog nearlt bit me take it home ffs cant win.
Kids eating junk food ffs not all parent restrict their kids to a burger and a bag of crisp once a month.
Loud kids bring them in your kids on screens send then out parents cant fucking win.

I dont even have kids but somethings i read just blows my mind.

IsthataNo · 28/05/2026 17:51

My DC wouldn't wear hats

Ours is so hit and miss. Loves to wear her sun hat while only wearing her nappy and eating strawberries indoors but throws it on the floor outside. We’ve been doing scalp spray and me just following her round trying to trick her into wearing it.

Heatwaveintheoffice · 28/05/2026 17:55

Times have moved on. There are plenty of sunscreens on the market that can be applied to the head and scalp. I am not saying parents shouldn't offer hats but I wouldn't judge parents of DC not wearing them.

tiramisugelato · 28/05/2026 17:56

Stop judging. You have no idea what sunscreen they're wearing or how often the parents have tried to keep hats on their heads.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 28/05/2026 17:57

I don't get worried as I leave the parents to parent their own DC. This is speaking as a parent who had a DC that wouldn't keep at hat on, no matter what I tried. Even now as an adult and knowing all the dangers she rarely wears a hat, although she will always wear sunscreen.

Having said this, I have just been to Tesco, and yes I was judging all the parents who were accompanied by children with obvious pink skin/sunburn

SillyQuail · 28/05/2026 18:00

Where I live (another European country) people - older women mainly - are constantly doling out unsolicited advice which is actually judgement disguised as concern. Its so damaging to your self esteem, particularly as a first time parent, to have someone publicly shame you for something you might have already tried your best with, hat wearing being a good example because plenty of babies and toddlers just won't wear them. It's unfortunate if many parents aren't aware of the dangers of sun damage but unless you're their health visitor or doctor, it's not your job to educate them and by intervening you might ruin an already fragile mum's day.

OutsideOfTheMoment · 28/05/2026 18:17

I only care about my own kids, I don’t waste my time worrying about other people’s kids.

Bestwishes23 · 28/05/2026 18:26

My DS has a skin condition and hats really irritate him. I closely monitor how much time he's had in the sun, when he's drinking water and his sun cream. Probably best you keep unsolicited comments to yourself.

TimewastingTea · 28/05/2026 18:39

I understand the concern for very tiny babies. Other children could have factor 50 suncream and a bottle of water and be ok.
My child loves the sea so I prioritise a rash vest to cover his shoulders more than a hat, and suncream his face.

Yes mine is the same, hats indoors are perfectly acceptable. Outside absolutely not.

I also use a spf50 mineral powder on her head which seems to do the job really well without making her hair greasy.

EmmaB1309 · 28/05/2026 20:54

Apart from when she was a baby, my daughter has never been a fan of hats or sunglasses. She’s 11 now and never once has had sunburn or sunstroke. Since a fairly young age she has always been fairly good at regulating her exposure, naturally seeking shade even without my guidance. Not saying all kids are like that.
But you can’t seriously be considering telling a stranger to put a hat on their child? You really think that is likely to be welcomed? Good luck with that.

ThisAmpleCritic · 28/05/2026 21:00

I saw a teeny tiny baby in a carrier yesterday, could only see bare skin. Should have been covered, imo. Poor thing 😟

Lillers · 28/05/2026 21:06

My toddler will put absolutely anything on her head except for a hat.

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 28/05/2026 21:56

Mind your own business. It doesn’t affect you. not that it matters but my daughter always has a hat with her but she literally sweats all over the place with it on and gets far to hot so takes it off. I use a spf scalp spray to prevent her head burning.
