Father in Law super negative

CocoBean22 · 27/05/2026 22:49

My father in law (73) who apart
from being negative I love to bits, he’s a kind hearted soul who would do anything for anyone.
But he’s so Negative 😫
DS falls down off his scooter - FIL says oh be careful you could have broken your leg doing that 🙄
I have a headache - FIL oh I knew someone who had that the went to bed never woke up had a brain aneurysm.
Out in the sun today - FIL make sure you put cream on I knew someone who didn’t wear sun cream and died of skin cancer.
Watching tv show and celebrities are abseiling down a cliff - Fu*k me they could go right over that cliff and die
Tick season. We’ve been checking for ticks as we have been camping in a grassy area, FIL says to us Oh you better watch out one bite from a tick and you can die from Lyme disease 😫
It’s just draining and it’s getting me down 😣
We are a family who want to surround ourselves with positive people and vibes but this pulls us down so much.
AIBU?
What can I do?

At a good time speak to him directly about it just as U have done here

24Dogcuddler · 27/05/2026 23:59

I’d ask him to “ think it don’t say it” especially in front of children who might worry or stop doing something Grandad thinks is unsafe.
He probably thinks he’s helping but just so much negativity as you say.

The worst didn't happen so he's actually counting blessings... Bad things 'can' happen. You guard against them, standard risk assessment

MesonBoson · 29/05/2026 15:17

Gently mock him for it:

Start calling Mr Negative

"And now, it's over to our negativity correspondent..."

Try to get in before him with... "I know someone who choked on a flake in a ninety-nine."

"Or you could get bit by a flea and die of plague"

MesonBoson · 29/05/2026 15:23

Or you could just say "Heck Brian, that's a bit negative innit?" every single time he does it.

Negativity bingo. One point each for:

Death

Disease

Accident

Paraplegia

Drowning

Ice-cream accident

Act-of-god

Amputation

Toxic-shock-syndrome

etc

My dad is like this, we call him Eyeore 😆 because it’s always raining in his part of the forest. I second the negativity bingo and the gentle ribbing. It makes you feel better.

Agree with those saying make a joke out of it. I find you can often be quite blunt to people in this kind of situation if you respond in an incredulous way and in a light hearted tone.
