Not to put your bare feet on a train seat ?

Just looked next to me and the passenger as slipped her shoes off and is resting her feet on the seat. She seemed surprised that I asked her to move them. It is disgusting isn’t it ?

It is just bad manners and grim.

Denim4ever · 28/05/2026 09:52

It is bad manners and a bit ewww. What are 'crusty' feet/toes ? What constitutes crust?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 28/05/2026 10:01

I had this a few years ago on a bus from central to south London only the woman was also picking at her feet (back seat). I didn’t say anything but was disgusted.

Are socks ok?

That would be a no from me. There’s a guy on my regular train who takes his shoes off and puts his feet up on the seat opposite. I don’t want to sit next to his feet, regardless of how clean his feet and socks may or may not be. It seems to be quite an effective way of keeping all 4 seats to himself though, maybe that’s his aim.

MayaLui · 28/05/2026 10:07

I couldn't get worked up about this.

Squirrel60 · 28/05/2026 10:11

I have no objection to bare feet on seats, as long as the feet are clean, but it's the filthy/muddy/stinky shoes/boots, whatever, on the seats I hate, and it marks up the seats!

MinnieMountain · 28/05/2026 10:16

Not a problem for me to see bare feet on seats so long as they're not on the seat next to me.

I am lying in a hammock right now, with my bare feet out. Am I disgusting? Should I have socks on?

Are you in a public place? Will other people be using the hammock?

Personally I think trying on shoes in shops with bare feet is minging.

Mumofoneandone · 28/05/2026 10:25

I sometimes have to put my feet up when travelling for medical reasons. Where possible I would sit on a seat and put my feet on my wheelchair but not always possible. I'd also rather feet than shoes!
My feet (with or without socks) would be clean tho!

garlicandsapphires · 27/05/2026 17:42

I don’t think it’s that grim actually. Shoes yes, but bare feet won’t be dirty exactly? I never see people walking around barefoot, let alone walking into toilets!!

Some people do have dirty horrible minging feet. Not everyone showers everyday, not everyone has good foot hygiene.

its disrespectful even if they have clean feet.

GoodkneeBadKnee · 28/05/2026 10:28

Some people are absolute skanks.

ClaredeBear · 28/05/2026 10:35

I think it depends really. If someone’s feet are filthy then no, not nice, but I’d have the same issue if they were putting dirty bags or hands on the seats. I guess I’d prefer to see them pop something down underneath their feet.

Yes and yes. I guess it’s a risk that I, and others who choose to use the hammock, are willing to take. Grin

Flamingojune · 28/05/2026 10:42

On long train journeys i often curl up on the seat in socks

amargaritaplease · 28/05/2026 11:18

I think it was more the fact that she was sitting opposite me and that the feet were right next to me, so that I could see them, and they were almost touching me, I wouldn’t have noticed if she hadn’t been directly opposite but I do think it’s rude to stick your feet in someone’s eye/nose line

Merseyrail fine people with their feet on the seats - my ex husband would have stank the whole train out!

YourPoliteTurtle · 28/05/2026 18:29

of course it's grim. Taking your shoes off in public is just rude.

It's funny, it's probably the same people who faint at the idea of keeping shoes indoors, but store their shoes in their bedroom next to their underwear and nightwear 😂

Don't get me started on the number of people who are happy to take their shoes off on a plane. No one wants to see or smell that, thanks. Wear comfortable shoes for the flight, undo the laces, and have some manners.

Are shoes off allowed in beaches and parks

if you google beachwear, that might give you a clue if you are not sure about the difference between a beach and public transport/ or place of work 😂

God people are grim.
A woman once sat several seats down from me in the cinema, took her shoes off and put her feet on the back of the chair in front. He feet absolutely stank!
I hate disgusting people with no manners or ideas about basic etiquette. There is just no consideration for others or respect for other people or property these days.

I agree. That's one of the reasons I don't go to the cinema these days. Horrible habits as well as chatting loudly to each other as if they're sitting on the sofa at home watching a dvd.

Ah so taking your shoes off in public is ok sometimes?

I have manners. I just don't think wearing shoes for a long flight is in any way rude. I keep my socks on but shoes come off ASAP. It probably has a lot to do with having very wide feet, so real struggles with finding shoes that really fit.

I don't feel comfortable in shoes for a long flight. So I make sure that I have clean feet and breathable shoes (so they don't become smelly) and I take them off as soon as the flight starts. The people I travel with have confirmed that they don't smell, and if someone doesn't like seeing feet, that's their problem.

19% of skanks disagree

YourPoliteTurtle · 28/05/2026 21:10

Some work places even had to remind people to keep their shoes off, there are ill mannered people everywhere, nothing new.
