AIBU to think it's worth a try? (John lewis quality issue)

I bought a robe from John Lewis in August of 2024, for around 80pounds. It always was weirdly plastic feeling- even tho its 100% cotton. I was from their Jasper Conrad range.

It always left fluff on my skin and shed strings in the wash, with use. It was annoying, but I ignored it.

It's getting worse now and I cant use it anymore. The weird plastic non absorbant feeling is the worst. I've googled it and I think it's because the fabric is coated in silicone. It's not gotten better with washes as I assumed either.

John Lewis don't have their lifetime guarantee on their clothes, but is there anything I can do to recover some cost?

Not after 18 months.

Ugh I thought so. But I was thinking, isn't it a fair exception to assume an item of clothing would last more than 2 years? I really thought I was buying quality with John Lewis hence the cost.

How are you going to prove it’s a quality issue though and not something you’ve done to it?

The time to return it was when you first washed it and it lost threads and showed issues.

The fabric shreds are all long and hanging out of the robe, in different stages of falling out. I'm not sure there is a way for someone to do that to fabric?.
Like it has disintegrated.

Also it's gotten much worse recently. When I first bought it, until recently it was easy to tolerate and ignore. Now it feels like its falling apart.

I know they'll most likely be covered by strict terms and will not care.

I'm just wondering about the fact that when you try to buy 'quality', which I associate with John Lewis, isn't it fair to expect it to last?

I'd be annoyed too, but assume they'll say so long has elapsed that it's tough. Always annoying when it's a little worn item that therefore doesn't get a lot of wear but it's been too long.

tiramisugelato · 27/05/2026 13:18

I’m not saying you can’t be annoyed but after nearly two years I’m just not sure what you expect from them - the damage could have been done in your washing machine or something.

Why wouldnt you at least send an email, no permission needed to ask the question, they can only say no

Yeah I'll send one. I'm fairly sure they wont be able to help. I was just wondering if I was being unreasonable to expect there to be a quality assurance trust when buying from John Lewis. I might as well have bought it from Primark.
