The Spidey Whisperer (just for fun)

Inspired by the “Armoured Spider Egg Chair” post.

My bedroom is on the ground floor and the window opens up in to my conservatory. Over the years, many spiders have taken residence in nooks and crannies in the conservatory. I used to regularly clean them out until we had a heatwave in 2018, when I observed that their residential status was helping keep the insect (especially mosquitoes) population at bay in my actual flat. My conservatory is a mosquito restaurant and acts as a buffer to the little buggers getting in and eating me instead.

So every year, I wait until the end of September then go and clear away any remaining webs. I very rarely see a spider in my actual flat, so it seems to suit both me and the spiders.

When I tell friends of this symbiotic relationship they shudder in horror.

YABU - Urgh, kill or evict ALL the spiders
YANBU - You are a very clever lady spidey whisperer

I love spiders and tarantulas. I have six in the room with me, albeit in tanks.

It sounds like a successful symbiotic relationship. Spiders are awesome. I can’t claim that I love them, they do creep me out a bit; but I can’t condone killing something harmless just because it’s in the way. I’ve often been in the garden or conservatory and enjoyed watching a spider trap and kill its prey with fascination: there’s spidey, curled up in the corner of his web, when a fly comes along and gets trapped - and spidey pounces, scuttles like lightening, and binds it up to devour. I like to imagine the spider feels like I do, when I see my food coming at a restaurant; that little jump of glee and relish.

Forgot to add that I am usually terrified of spiders. It just seems that in this little microcosm they’re my allies. I provide them with a home and food, and they help prevent me getting bitten to shizzle by mozzies.

This is my take on spiders. I don't want them on me (well, except a lucky money spider maybe) but I think they are fascinating and very useful creatures.

That's why I have I have a couple of Cellar Spiders living with us, Stephanie & Steve.
They live here rent free in return for them munching all the other spiders & flies.
Once I caught them getting all romantic in my bedroom & I was so embarrassed 😳 so I left them too it 😂
Hours later Steph was in the bathroom & Steve was in the landing so I don't know if they fell out, or she was contemplating a bath & he was chilling.

She was probably having a post coital pee 😄

I did rescue a bumblebee earlier, but they’re welcome to the mozzies
