To feel ripped off by boiler "service"

Got a new boiler five years ago. Independent, local family company installed it and have serviced it every year since. Friendly, professional, the one time something went wrong with it they were quick to sort it out and all under the warranty. So all good and I'm keen to maintain a good relationship with them.

Last year's service was 80-something quid, including VAT. This year's falls due so the guy comes round - and he's here for literally 10 minutes. I hear a couple of noises, some water briefly running, and he says "all good". He says he'll email me the invoice. I ask him how much, thinking there surely must be some lower minimum call out charge for such a short visit doing virtually nothing, and he says £94!

I didn't say anything, but did a quick Google after he left and consensus seems to be somewhere between 80 - 120 quid for a service, so OK. BUT a proper service should take 30 - 60 minutes to do all the checks necessary to maintain the warranty.

I like to treat tradespeople with respect and don't like haggling over stuff like this. I understand they're running a business with fixed costs, and have to pay for their travel time between jobs etc. But nearly a ton for 10 minutes work - seriously? At what point is it just taking the piss?

Thinking when I get the invoice I'll reply, point out how briefly he was here, double check that he actually did everything necessary and ask whether they might consider a lower call out charge when there's so little to do. AIBU?

I don't have to keep getting it serviced by them, but it would seem a shame.

Yeah I had exactly the same thing last time I had my boiler serviced. Was miffed!

There’s a lot to check but it doesn’t take long when there’s no issues

If it's a gas boiler there are some parts which have to be replaced after 5 years. He should also be doing pressure checks and other stuff I don't understand but know are on our service people's checklists. Ours usually takes at least half an hour, more if there are replacement parts.

We have an insurance contract on our boiler but the guy I spoke to last time said if they just did a service, not under insurance contract, it was about £150. He was a service engineer from the manufacturer.

Sorry for multiple edits....it's hot....

Ten minutes sounds a bit quick.

Were you given a service report?
This should have listed what was done, including flue gas analysis readings.

He said he'll email me the certificate. Is that what you mean?

Ideally I don't want to start arguing the toss over what was done and needs to be done, as he's the specialist and I'm paying him to know that stuff which I don't. I just think if it can sometimes be as quick as that, they ought to have a mechanism for a lower minimum call out charge, maybe based on 1/2 hour rate rather than an hour.

Plumber comes and spends 20 minutes fixing my sink and charges me his one hour minimum - OK, I get that. He's travelling between jobs, has to cover his day's labour and doesn't know how long it will take. But that might be £45 or so. Twice that for 10 minutes just makes me feel like a mug.

Did you get him to sign in your boiler book?

dropoutin · 26/05/2026 18:37

Yes, he always does that.

Well I just googled flue gas check and it said about 10-15 mins (apparently the boiler has to ready a steady burning state as it probably emits more CO on cold, less complete combustion) and that should be part of the annual service.

Did the guy issue you with a certificate and is he gas safe registered ?

I know a lot of manufacturers guarantees on boilers are only valid if you do the service every year. And if you are a landlord you probably need to have the check every year as well.

I've come to the conclusion that for my domestic servicing the 1 year service is a bit of an overkill. I maintain a separate CO monitor and clean the magnetic traps/do any repressurisation/test the inhibitor (which do in fairness catch a fair bit of crap) out myself. Your requirements may differ.

I have learnt a lot from the engineers while they drink their coffee though. The ones that were sent to me from the big firm knew a lot of stuff, as well as giving me some hints on reducing bills and checking other stuff out for me during the visit which adds value.

I am not a heating engineer, so DYOR

It should take more than 10 mins.

Sorry I've never seen a gas certificate so not sure. With oil you get a report with all the jobs done, analysis readings & any problems/fixes needed.

I pay a local guy (West Midlands) £55 for my boiler service.
