I think in certain situations it is all thats needed to get past a crisis situation especially with conditions lile bpd. I have bpd and I can go from its the end of the world suicidal to being calm and fine in quite a short period of time

FourSevenThree · 26/05/2026 15:58

In some cases yes - get over the immediate crisis, set medication if relevant, hand over to live at home with community services/other support.

BillieWiper · 26/05/2026 15:59

Well if it's a section 2 it's 28 days. I'm not sure of there's another one that is less?

It really depends on the patient and their illness and how easy it is to diagnose, start to treat and see improvement.

Someone could be in acute psychosis one hour and seem normal the next.

PercyPigsAreOverRated · 26/05/2026 16:00

Yes sometimes. And there are rules about how long you can be detained for. So you could be detained initially for assessment, but not reach the criteria to be kept on a section.

4 and 5(2) are both less. I can't remember how long off the top of my head. 72 hours maybe.

dudsville · 26/05/2026 16:02

It's helpful if someone lacks capacity and is at risk of making dangerous decisions.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 26/05/2026 16:03

Yes, many years ago I was detained under a section 2 for up to 28 days and was allowed to leave after two days, and an assessment by a psychiatrist. It was a very dark time and, while I recall apologising for using up NHS resources, it was a shock that was useful in moving forwards.

Ah ok thank you. Yeah I guess that could be for psychosis couldn't it? I've have been on section 2 before but they rescinded it half way through. So even if it's a certain number of days if you're sufficiently better before that they should rescind. I'd hope.

HRTQueen · 26/05/2026 16:08

yes it can be very good for some people as it could be that they have used drugs, not taken their medication and they respond very well to being back on medication and there is simply no need for them to be in hospital longer

Others being in a safe contained space just for a few days whole readjusting to medication can be very helpful too

Yeah I know. In my further post I explained I was on it and rescinded after 14 days.

It could be for anything mental health related. Section 4 is emergency, 5(2) is, IIRC ,doctors holding power. I think 5(3) is nurses holding power.

Madformaltesers · 26/05/2026 16:50

5(4) is nurses holding power, you can also be on a Section 136 for a short period

Thanks very much for explaining! I only knew of sections 2 and 3.

XenoBitch · 26/05/2026 17:30

They could be on a CTO and recalled to hospital. During one of my stays, one lady was admitted 3 times for getting drunk and not taking her meds. She would stay a couple of nights and go back home.
