To Ban Air-con

chaosmaker · Today 11:12

On a rapidly heating planet, shouldn't we be looking for ways to build/fit housing for all sorts of extreme weather?
Air-con just makes it hotter for everyone overall as it adds heat into the environment and makes it worse overall.

OP posts:

No. Ban the word ban.

Vodkamartini3olives · Today 15:07

Modern heat pumps are really efficient and environmentally friendly. They reduce your carbon footprint massively.

The French Can we have air conditioning Of course you can. The Spanish Can we have air conditioning Of course you can. The Italians Can we have air conditioning Of course you can The Brits, Can we have air conditioning No you bloody cant It adds to climate change!!!!!!!!!!

turkeyboots · Today 15:20

There are growing demands to limit aircon to 25 or 26 degrees in hot parts of the world due to the energy demand. And my Greek holiday villa booking says it has restrictions than mean I can only use it between 10pm and 7am and no lower than 22 degrees. DH isn't happy.

Singapore dials down on air‑con as oil crunch grips Asia share.google/RZKIIuT8rexyZnwqD

The fact that the UK (looking at you OP) cheers for their own below standard quality of life, and even offers to pay for it, will never cease to amaze and infuriate.

But in the Mediterranean most places have air con?

Exactly this, they've all got aircon and when you rent an apartment that hasnt got it for holidays, they're considerably cheaper because no one wants to stay there!

JenniferBooth · Today 15:27

CurdinHenry · Today 13:23

On a rapidly heating planet, available Aircon should be mandatory. Drives me insane that climate change puritans would rather people boil to death.

Every single one of them should be made to spend the whole summer in a top floor flat in a social housing tower block.

Mydoglovescheese · Today 15:29

I grew up before central heating and air con. Life was miserable when temperatures were either too low or too high. Also, try teaching 30 grouchy and sweaty kids in a classroom with inadequate cooling, particularly after a PE lesson! I appreciate being able to live in a comfortable home no matter what the weather conditions are.

bootle96 · Today 15:31

Can we choose if we give us air con or central heating? I’d rather give up central heating, don’t mind being cold and live in a well insulated mid terraced house, barely need central heating. I’m absolutely useless in hot weather!

I'd like to ban flying too.

I am not entirely sure how they will restrict that, but this will be down to past misuse.

I speak from extensive experience when I say that few follow attempts to limit AC use, often leaving them on when they go out or simply leaving them on while they are outside in the pool all day - leaving doors open.

We have found that those not used to using AC are the worst offenders. Nobody needs a decently maintained split unit AC running on 19 degrees!

With energy prices rising all the time, more restrictions will be put in place regarding holiday rentals and AC. Same as heating in the winter.

Wtf?

When Paris was building the accommodation in the Olympic village (which was built to serve as council housing after the games), they didn't put the air-conditioning in, they just designed the building so it doesn't need it, it should be nice inside for the majority of the year and ok to live in the few hottest days in a year. The decision was based on the fact, that air-conditioning is not needed for living in Northern France.

It's absurd comparing the UK up north with Spain or Italy, but even in Spain and Italy there are many homes without air-con.

In my home we've started by putting up an outside sun blind, which shades the window most exposed to the sun. It takes a few degrees of and means it's ok inside.

My one bedroom top floor social housing flat

  1. Fire door and window restrictors. No gaps allowed for the former and windows only open a couple of inches Health and safety rules have turned flats into even worse sweat boxes.
  2. The fridge freezer. It cant cope in these temps and conks out Im damn sure the eco warriors dont like the idea of wasted food either.
  3. Bowel issues. Made a lot worse in this weather.
  4. Food stored in cupboards including the hall cupboard has to be kept an eye on too. It cant all be stored in the fridge and it isnt meant to be.
TorturedParentsDepartment · Today 15:41

Yep we have portable a/c units, yep it's on right now (right now I would marry it if I could) - we have solar panels, we have a house battery, and in this kind of weather we're basically generating electricity FOR the grid and then our house battery is full which runs the air con into the evening if it's really hot.

I am not going to feel guilty for it.

Im aware of that Im half Italian. My late uncle and my aunts house is concrete stone and marble.
I was just pointing out that its always us Brits who are told to go without and not only with air conditioning

JHound · Today 15:44

Nah. Air con is a must even in for for purpose buildings. When I lived in Queensland, the old style queenslander homes, while ok were nowhere near as good as having a/c. And the tube absolutely needs a/c!!

And I'm asking WTF?

I've just gave you an example when it was decided that French people should "go without". So how on earth would you say it always only Brits?

Nah You used up north and purposely wanted to assume that is where i am because the south east where i ACTUALLY am wouldnt have suited your side of the debate because its hotter

No, English isn't my first language and
I said that It's absurd comparing the UK (being) up north with Spain or Italy, but even in Spain and Italy there are many homes without air-con.

Meaning, it is absurd to compare even the most southern point of the UK with Spain or Italy, as the whole UK is quite northern from them.

I’m American, not British, and no, absolutely the fuck not. If your climate solution is “ban AC” before redesigning infrastructure, housing, and power grids for extreme heat, then you’re basically volunteering the elderly, disabled, and chronically ill as tribute. In huge parts of the US people would literally die without AC. This isn’t one dramatic week of 82-degree weather where you buy a desk fan and open a window, it’s sustained extreme heat for months and I’m not noble enough to die sweaty in my living room so some idiot online can feel environmentally enlightened.
