Depends ….
on the mental health problem
and the alternatives in your locality -
a+e is hell on earth
but sometimes with mental health crisis it is the only option

Crisis teams are crap in my area. They say they'll ring back within the next 48 hours, which is useless if someone isn't safe. So it would have to be A&E round here.

Wishitsnows · 25/05/2026 13:44

There are not really any other options in some areas. If they are under a mental health team they may just give them a call every few weeks

Larrythecatforpm · 25/05/2026 13:46

Not really, it won’t make any difference in terms of speeding up support.

Is this you? What are the reasons for the a&e visits, who is taking them/you there

Is there a local mental health crisis team? Ours visited DH on a Saturday and can give access or signpost to services

The mental health team here tells their patients to go to A & E every time, they feel suicidal out of office hours. They call it a place of safety - I imagine they think it gives people time, for the mood to wear off.

If patients don’t go, the mental health trust will say, they are not engaging with services and may discharge them from all waiting lists for treatment, etc. If patients tell HCPs, they felt suicidal but didn’t go to A & E, they don’t take it seriously and decide it’s just manipulation and attention seeking! Patients could end up with a diagnosis of EUPD, which is a real stigma and means physical health problems may also not be taken seriously, as more attention seeking!
