sudden hearing loss

Any advice would be great. One week ago, following stressful family news, I suddenly experienced a sensation of fullness and pressure in my ear, feeling as though there was liquid trapped inside. The sensation improved slightly when lying on my side but it continued to bother me a bit over the next few days.
Today, after receiving more stressful news, it has worsened significantly. I now have severe hearing loss in that ear and can barely hear anything on that side. It's bank holiday obviously tomorrow so no GP, has anyone experienced this before. What to do? Should I be worried my hearing won't come back on that ear?

See a gp tue.

Octavia64 · 24/05/2026 20:53

See a gp but a lot of ear infections cause temporary hearing loss due to inflammation and ear wax buildup as a result.

I get it a lot

Hi OP, i had something similar and it cleared up after a couple of weeks. The GP gave me antibiotics. It was an infection. Just trying to reassure you. My hearing is fine now.

Tiddlysocks · 24/05/2026 20:59

Actually, I would go to A and E, given that tomorrow is a holiday. Any sudden loss of hearing should be checked out quickly, especially if it is new to you.

TheyGrewUp · 24/05/2026 21:02

I lost my hearing suddenly in my left ear once. Saw the Dr and it was wax build up.

My DD had sudden sensio neural hearing loss in one ear a few years ago. I googled it the morning after it happened and it said that it's an emergency and to go to A&E immediately. She was given steroids for a week or two and her hearing returned. Some people don't get the hearing back.

My sudden hearing loss, which has lead to permanent hearing loss, is usually triggered by intense stress and treated by steroids (Infusion or tablets).

52ndtime · 24/05/2026 21:15

yes intense stress was present. Do I need to go to A&E tonight or can it wait until tomorrow morning?

I have no other symptoms at all and completely well in myself other than that sense of fulness or cotton in my left ear

Do I have to call 111?

MagicMarkers · 24/05/2026 21:19

I think it's important to go quickly.

When we went to A&E the triage nurse said we shouldn't have gone to A&E, but grudgingly let us see the doctor. The doctor said that we were absolutely right to go in and gave her steroids.

Turnitoffnonagain · 24/05/2026 21:19

I had this recently, and it is something that you should get treated quickly as it can become permanent deafness. My GP got me an appt at ent for a hearing test. I had strong steroids for 2 weeks. Ok now.

TheOtherSide21 · 24/05/2026 21:20

I’d call 111. I say this as someone who is now partially deaf due to a missed ear infection and being fobbed off by my GP despite a lengthy history of infected ears, especially as a child.

Hearing and sight- not to be left.

MagicMarkers · 24/05/2026 21:20

My daughter wasn't stressed and felt fine otherwise. It happened suddenly while she was watching TV.

fantam · 24/05/2026 21:23

It could be a lot of things. Have you tried to pop it, by holding your nose and swallowing or blowing gently, like in a plane. You could try wax treatment drops and see if that helps. It could be blocked Eustachian tube, it could be something a bit more troublesome and maybe serious.

I don't know what to advise. Maybe 111?

52ndtime · 24/05/2026 21:26

I know health is most important but logistically due to my kids it will be very difficult to make a dash to A& tonight I could go first thing in the morning

Decided to go to A&E first thing in the morning. Difficult times.

I hope that won't be too late with the steroids if that's needed.

OP posts:
popcornsong · 24/05/2026 22:50

Go to A&E definitely. This is an emergency. You may well need steroids and if you don’t start them urgently you may never get your hearing back. This happened to me. Insist that the steroids are considered. Google Sudden Hearing Loss.

Schoolsschsxho · 24/05/2026 22:52

you need to go to A&E and ask for steroids (as others have said.)
Unless treated very very quickly the hearing loss can be permanent.

52ndtime · 24/05/2026 22:55

now??

OP posts:
cupfinalchaos · 24/05/2026 23:00

Please listen to me op as although I am not a medic I have experience of this. You need to be referred ASAP to an ENT to have a steroid injected into the ear, otherwise you risk your hearing never coming back. Speed is of the essence here.

52ndtime · 24/05/2026 23:02

what shall I tell 111 - calling them now
