DD is breastfed and has been prescribed gaviscon. If you ff you just put the powder in the bottle but we are bf so you have to make it up by adding first 5ml and then 10ml of water. I asked the pharmacist for a syringe to measure the water with and to administer it. She charged me 55p for it . I know its only 55p which I can afford but it was the principle. I feel discriminated against for bf

use a spoon

Liz79 · 22/06/2008 19:05

Its the principle of giving the medicine but not the means to administer it. GP said they didn't have any so ask the pharmacist. Its a weeny but anti-bf as with ff it just goes in the bottle, no messing.

How old is your baby? Can you add it it a bottle of expressed milk?

Saymyname · 22/06/2008 19:10

oh, and YABU.

TinkerbellesMum · 22/06/2008 19:12

Boots do them for free, all chemists I've been to have and I've found that my GP and the Children's are happy to give them out.

TinkerbellesMum · 22/06/2008 19:14

Oh and Boots charge 5p without a prescription, you have to ask for them though.

lulalullabye · 22/06/2008 19:15

maybe you should inject it into your nipple then it would be bf pc

misdee · 22/06/2008 19:16

those little measuring spoons that come with other medicines, thats 5mls. use one of them, then add two more.

you have to pay for syrienges sadly.

but dh always has spares.

4madboys · 22/06/2008 19:19

two threads the same?

like i said on the other one, i have always been given them for free by my chemist you were just unlucky?

oh and i bottlefeed my youngest and i wouldnt mix medicine in his formula, you cant be sure that he would get it all, depending on if he drank less and there is always a residual amount left in the bottle etc, so i would still use a syringe to give it to him.

2shoes · 22/06/2008 19:22

next time just ask the gp to add it to the prescription. or change chemist. my chemist would always give me one for free. (paying for one would be discriminating against dd as she is disabled)

aGalChangedHerName · 22/06/2008 19:44

I have bf 3 dc's and always paid for the syringes as they took medicine better with that than off a spoon.

Would not have occured to me expect not to pay for it tbh. Never felt discriminated against for bfing either.

Bit silly to get into such a state over 55p tbh. YABU imo.

Saymyname · 22/06/2008 19:45

Bleurgh to a bottle of milk with gaviscon in it.

JennsterSlugSlayer · 22/06/2008 19:46

Gaviscon powder is different, that is just how it is dosed. With liquid prescription medications, the cost of a spoon is reimbursed within the prescription to the pharmacist. It still doesn't cover the cost of the syringe which really is that expensive. There is no reimbursement with the gaviscon powder.

syringes are not prescribable.

ScottishMummy · 22/06/2008 19:50

liz no anti-bf or bias present.you are discussing mode of administration not a purposeful deliberate attempt to discriminate or undermine bf.you are being too machivellian by half

this is simply that a syringe was your preferred mode of administration not the only you could have given on a spoon (whether you are a bf or not).

next time just ask gp

deliberate bias/discrimination against BF would be
Are you a bf?
Yes
Syringe 55p please

or
Are you a bf?
NO
Syringe free thanks

Mercy · 22/06/2008 20:00

Shall we organise a whip round?

It's 55p fgs

Syringes are reusable

JennsterSlugSlayer · 22/06/2008 20:05

And they make great bath toys until they learn how to load them themselves when they become not so great as the ceiling gets splattered
