To think loo roll isn't what it once was?

I don't think it can just be me.

In recent years I feel loo roll just let's your finger go right through it. Wonder what the point is and thinking of just getting a bidet?

Am I the only one?

Have you got something nice planned to do for this bank holiday week-end?

FoulBlister · 23/05/2026 15:04

Completely agree with you.
Thin, shreds, roll lasts about half the time it used to. Same price as before.

AnnieBond · 23/05/2026 15:06

I buy Andrex (the pink one) and think it's good.

bidet is not for me.

CoffeeCantata · 23/05/2026 15:10

Buy big (6 or 12-packs) of Tesco's own. It's the best, and far superior to Andrex etc.

The small packs are different - much smaller rolls.

I speak as something of a connoisseur.

You are underestimating the importance and role (pun intended!) of toilet paper in our lives. These humble things make a big difference to quality of life.

Saladcreamormayo · 23/05/2026 15:17

Yep i agree and its ridiculously expensive these days too. Andrex the regular pink pack is such poor quality I will never buy it again. Also what happened to coloured toilet rolls? I remember us having peach or green coloured rolls back in the 90s.

I really do miss the green ones!

Lol I just thought it was really sad that the OP had to resort to posting threads about bog roll on a bank holiday week-end. Feel sorry to her more than anything. She never responded so I guess the answer is no, she hasn't planned anything nice to do this long summer drenched weekend. 😥

Not everyone wants to sit in traffic, or be surrounded by families, and/or not everyone gets a bank holiday off work. A nice day can be sitting in your own garden. However during those three days, you will need to take a shit, or if female, wipe, so toilet paper will feature.

the irony of
a) moaning that the OP hasn't bothered to come back to their thread, when their post is literally the one above yours.

b) judging someone for not having anything better to do on a sunny weekend than start a thread about toilet paper, while also posting twice (i.e. what you thought was MORE than the OP!)

Maybe you should take your own advice? Taking the time to post on a thread you have no interest in suggests you have even less going on than the person who started it!

CoffeeCantata · 23/05/2026 17:25

Mind you, it depends how far back in history you want to go. Does anyone here remember 'Izal Medicated'?

It was basically greaseproof paper on a roll and schools, public loos, offices etc used it. On each sheet was printed 'Now wash your hands', in red I think.

I was at school in the late 70s and I remember our geography teacher had no tracing paper for us to copy a map with (those were the days!) so someone went to the loos and got a roll of Izal and gave us all a piece.

I think, where there was a septic tank system, it had to be Izal - in those days septic tanks couldn't cope with soft paper.

You are going around posting the same bank holiday comment on a few different trending threads today. Seems you feel sorry for a lot of Mumsnet this weekend!

Posting on MN to sneer at people for 'having nothing better to do than post on MN' are really unimaginative and a bit dim.

People may be sitting by the bed of a sick relative, or be confined to bed/home by illness or disability. They might have been working/playing hard and MN is a bit of a break from that.

Not everyone is in a position to head to the seaside (or similar) just because it's a bank holiday.

fussychica · 23/05/2026 18:52

Agree but at least it's not Izal. Now that was rough, ouch!

Latenightreader · 23/05/2026 18:55

I am another who suffered through tracing paper in the school toilets - quite frankly everything after that is luxurious!

I also remember how rough late 80s/early 90s recycled loo roll felt. I remember getting a painful scratch because there were lumps in the paper...

Lallybroch · 23/05/2026 19:00

I'm 62 and remember using my grandparents outside toilet. On a good day it was Izal, otherwise it was newspaper! As children we weren't allowed to use the upstairs bathroom that had pink Andrex. At home we were always running out of paper and the spare was kept in the kitchen, not great. After all the childhood trauma I now use What the Crap toilet paper, comes in a large box, so never run out and love the quality.
