Radio/music constant through the wall from neighbour but on low

How much noise is too much noise? The neighbour has had radio on since 4am. Previously it was loud so I explained I wasn't enjoying it, but it's on quite low but constantly on. Is this ok or unreasonable?

They are allowed to have the radio on. As you said, it’s on low

I need the radio or white noise on low to help my tinnitus.

They may be allowed, but is it acceptable? I always give consideration anywhere I am. I always make sure my music / tv is never high enough to disturb anyone. I don't think a tv or radio should be able to be heard by a neighbour through a wall at anytime.

Are you in a new build?

You can hear a mouse fart from next door in some of them.

Of course it’s acceptable to have a radio on low in your house.

4am is unacceptable. Are they very old? Maybe worth suggesting some headphones.

It is an old mid terraced building. Radio on low as in if it was on in my property. It must be on loud from their property. I wouldn't mind so much but I regularly work from home and need silence to concentrate or can't hear the tv properly.
Suggest headphones to my neighbours? I've tried playing my music through earphones but struggle to concentrate.
I do have earplugs which work quite well, just a bit annoyed at the ignorance. We have a shared archway where they have filled it with junk which means I can't get to the garden through it and have to carry stuff through the house.
The noise is from teenagers usually. The parents are usually out.

How do you know?

Fibrous · 24/05/2026 14:32

I’m mid terrace in a Victorian row of houses. You can also hear a mouse fart here. There is only a single brick between the houses, and all the plumbing runs through them carrying all the noise. When I have a bath, I can hear every conversation next door even clearer than those in my own house.

You get used to it or you move.

Shittyyear2025 · 24/05/2026 15:37

You don't have a right to silence op, as other people need to live. It's not massively loud, as you say. I'd have an issue with it being on at 4am, but if you need silence to work then maybe you need to think about going back to the (silent??) office. YABU.

It sounds like you’re sensitive to noise, but that doesn’t mean other people don’t have a right to make normal levels of noise in their own home.

Greenlint · 24/05/2026 15:43

It wouldn't meet the threshold for a noise complaint with the council so you wouldn't be able to take any kind of action against them. As far as the law is concerned what they are doing is acceptable.

TalkToTheHand123 · 24/05/2026 16:31

I had an issue with the previous neighbour before them and I contacted the council. The lady there said if I found it a nuisance, then it was valid complaint at any time of the day.
I've been outside and can tell it is loud. The archway is quite wide also so even more evidence the volume is loud. Over the last few months the teens were screaming out to songs on a karaoke machine every Saturday night. I wasn't too fussed with this as it was a Weekend evening, but it is still a little ignorant. Their dogs bark everytime someone passes their house or knocks at their door.
