Neighbour parking halfway on my designated parking space

Argh - this is more of a vent, but it's really got my gander up! I rent a house with 2 allocated parking spaces out the front. My neighbours new fella keeps parking halfway onto one of my spaces. I park in the middle of my 2 spaces as I have mobility issues, but he is gradually encroaching more and more onto my space, and tonight he's parked over half of my space.

I hate the anger it fires in me! I know there are far worse things, but I think it's just his attitude of just not giving a fig about other people. I pay rent each month for my property, not for him to have a bigger parking space!

Ordinarily I would try to have a friendly word, but he is a gobby tw*t who smokes weed, plays his music loud, comes home late and drunk shouting his head off. I dislike him immensely, I think my neighbour could raise her standards - but I know it's nothing to do with me.

What would be a reasonable thing to do here? I have thought of approaching my neighbour - but I have previously asked her not to play loud music in the garden at 2 am when my daughter has school the next day, asked her to smoke weed away from our fence and house as it stinks . . . I just feel like I am constantly moaning - maybe I am. Maybe I am just old and very grumpy! 🤣

Can you park further over to give you space the side you need to get out but to stop him encroaching - no need to speak to them but stops the behaviour.

rwalker · 22/05/2026 21:07

Wouldn’t bother me because it sound like it annoys you rematches than affects you

driving or reverse in to the space he’s 1/2 in then you can get out into the empty one

Easilyforgotten · 22/05/2026 21:07

Could you park diagonally across your 2 bays? Or is he already there?

I do try to do this - but it only works if I get home first. Tonight I was taking my son out to his club, and when I got home he'd already parked there.

He was already there when I got home. I have parked really close to him on my passenger side as a passive aggressive stance 😆

Definitely have a friendly word first. Don't moan - just be in control of your space and assume they didn't get it..
Then if they are still twats a cone on the edge of yours so they see it and actively have to trespass.
Legal action.

Another thought, I realise it's a rental but could you have the spaces marked as blue badge bays?

I don't think my LL would agree . . .

This is what you need to do. Park as close to his car as you can. When he's not there straddle both spaces but giving way more space to your own side. And I'd probably be a bit clumsy with the door too.

Does he realise you park in the middle due to your mobility needs? I would politely explain that to begin with.

Is your property LA / SH? In which case would they agree to yellow hatching as for a disabled space?

Do you both have the same landlord? And could have a word?

Would planters, plant pots along the boundary work?

Yeah I think I am going to have to do this - only it's tricky when I have my kids in the car - I could always let them out before I park I guess (it's okay - they're teenagers - I wouldn't do that with toddlers! 😅).

Planters on the outside edges of the two spaces (but just within them) should do the trick. Means only one car will fit in the spot but still gives you plenty of space to get in and out at the side. Planters aren’t structural so your landlord shouldn’t object.

They can just climb out the drivers side door, only a bit of bum shuffling.

It's private rent and I work from home, but do school runs and after school clubs, and I go out socially of an evening, he seems to arrive whenever I am out - and tonight it just really annoyed me. I hate feeling like someone is taking the proverbial out of me - so trying to gain perspective.

This is a good idea!

I’d have a polite word to explain its because of mobility issues, and he still PLAT (parks like a twat) then I’d get a row of sturdy planters.

They see me walking with a stick, so they know I struggle, and have mentioned it in general conversation before, so they are aware. I think it was after they previously scoffed at my parking, and I explained why I park over both spaces. It feels like they feel that I am on my own, have 2 spaces, so I should give up some of my space, and in all honesty if they asked, I'd probably agree a small amount - but it's just the audacity of parking there without any thought or regard.

Sturdy planters seem to be the way to go. Now watch me forget they're there and scratch my own car! 🤣

I think you just need one chunky one right where his driver’s door would open. That leaves the rest of the space free for you.

Yep, if you’ve already done the explaining bit and the mobility issues are obvious, straight to some hefty planters just inside the boundary it is!
