Have clothing sizes got bigger?

tickettothesun · Yesterday 09:47

I have been clothes shopping and I am finding the size I usually wear too big and smaller sizes I would never have got into seem to be the same size as the clothes I have at home.
I am definitely still the same as I’ve always been and still fit the clothes I already have in my size.
Have sizes just got bigger and I didn’t know this?

Definitely.

Lockdowns and fast food. Clothing manufacturers were aware that everyone had got bigger.

But now, with weight loss injections, I imagine the average weight in the UK is going down. Don’t know how long it will be before we see a consequent editing of clothing size measurements.

So I’m not imagining it.
It makes it hard when you order online because you don’t know what will fit, it’s bad enough that different shops have different sizing.

Oh dear, everyone else knew didn’t they? No I’m not new here I’ve been under this rock a while.
Haven’t got new clothes for a long time though, at least not for myself.

lol. I was thinking the same. There are loads of threads on here about vanity sizing.

Some shops like Next and M&S come up massive in most things. Boden comes up more true to size or used to, I haven’t bought anything from there is a while. Higher end brands tend to be more true to size. Zara’s sizing is all over the place, It’s trial and error and reading reviews.

“We’ve lost sight of what a healthy weight is”.

“no wonder there’s an obesity epidemic “.

just getting my bingo card ready nice and early in the thread.

There are threads frequently about "vanity sizing", or threads with people complaining they can't find plus sizes anymore, or that if you are less than a size 10 there are no clothes in the shops.... I think the overall message is that women's clothes sizes are massively inconsistent generally across the board.

Often the messages from these threads is that women are just unacceptable at any size, whether they are getting bigger or getting smaller, the inconsistency is the fault of women for daring to exist in varying sizes!

Ffffff886 · Yesterday 10:59

No they're getting smaller, there was a time they were generous circa 5 years ago but now they are stricter and tighter.

mondaytosunday · Yesterday 11:01

You’ve never heard of vanity sizing? A size 12 now is the same as a size 4-6 was back in the 70s. In the 1990-2000s there was another shift into more generous measurements and also increasing inconsistency between brands.

FeelingSadToday1 · Yesterday 11:02

sizings are pointless these days. I went shopping last week. I am a solid size 8. In the same shop some 8’s fit, some were too big or small. A 10 in one dress I couldn’t do up but in a similar style the 8 was baggy.

NotAnotherScarf · Yesterday 11:04

Not from the male side of things. Trousers that are labeled one size, when measured are smaller. Shirts that have a large collar size, not fitting chest or tummy. Trousers being too tight on thighs.

It's not the size they are just badly made to cut costs. M&s big culprit.

ShetlandishMum · Yesterday 11:07

I bought a fleece jacket size L from a Norwegian brand. My friend bought a cost size L from a Scandinavian brand. Bought last month and we have bought the brands before.

My 13 yo fitting size S got both of them.

So yes. You need to look twice now.

7238SM · Yesterday 11:08

It really depends on the brand. Even within the same brand, one top can be a different size to another- well I find anyways. I've got some ranging 3 sizes from the same shop!

One other thing I've found is ridiculously long legs in trousers. I'm 168cm (5ft6) and have always bought 'regular' length trousers but lately, they seem to drag on the floor. I also find jackets only come up to where a watch strap is and never long enough. Maybe I just have orangutang type limbs 😂

This. I hang on to clothes I love for a very long time. As a consequence my wardrobe contains labels from 10 to 16 - the 10s being my most recent purchases and the 16s being those I’ve owned for years. Anyone who thinks the proportionally small number of people on Munjaro etc will affect this is delusional.

keepswimming38 · Yesterday 11:11

M&S I’m size 16 in their new stuff but a 12-14 everywhere else. I think they are just inconsistent.

Agree trouser lengths and dress lengths are ridiculous! I am 5ft4 and summer dresses in regular shops ie M&S ,Next ,Tu are just too long!

I hope so,! But yes as a nation our obesity levels are very concerning

CoyGoldenKoi · Yesterday 11:12

I'm a small size 8 now, 60kg.

20 years ago and 10kg lighter, I was a medium size 10.

When I make clothes from vintage 1970s patterns, I'm a 16!!

Yes, vanity sizing is a thing and has been for decades.

That is the converse of vanity sizing.

ToffeeCrabApple · Yesterday 11:19

I work for a fashion brand.

They have, generally

But there's also other factors at play.

Different brands deliberate size to what they think their target demographic is - which might mean a looser or tighter fit.

American sized clothes come up wider as a rule. Italian/Spanish brands usually come up more petite.

People blame obesity but height also plays a big part. When you get taller all the dimensions tend to get a bit bigger- hips, shoulders, even if still slim. Young women these days are quite a bit taller than their grandmothers were.

Cordeliasdemonbabies · Yesterday 13:04

It annoys me particularly when there are numbered waist measurements that don't match the waist on the trousers.

Inconsistency is the most annoying thing. I have compared two pairs of trousers from Next on the shop floor at the same size to have almost my whole palms worth of difference in the waist circumference.
