AIBU to be concerned about children that spend all the time cycling noisily near my flat?

There are a couple of families near me, when it’s weekends or holidays, their DC just spend the time riding around on their bikes up and down the parking area where my flat is. They don’t live in the flats but one of the houses opposite the entrance.

They do this when it’s raining and dark. Obviously not the issue at the moment.

I know one of the mums works for a shop part time in the town as seen her in the shop.

I feel sorry for the kids. If parents can’t afford to take them out - we have 3 parks in 15 minutes walk in different directions.

An issue is that the kids bikes need oiling/WD40 as they squeak. Bloody annoying when hybrid working on the phone most of the time. Before anyone asks - this issue has only arisen since February.

I've just walked through the parking area at the back of my house. Open area with garages. There was several local kids riding bikes and scooters having a great time, it's teacher training day for several schools here. I smiled and said hello, it was lovely to see. My kids are older teens now and used to do exactly this in the same parking area. It was lovely to see this generation of kids enjoying it as well.

Maybe you could break some glass bottles in the cycling zone. That'd teach the little bastards.

You sound demented, tbh.

I’m ok with noisy children but the mentality of riding up and down the same area must be boring

Come on now OP, you are not concerned. You are annoyed, which is fine!
But just say it how it is.

Just read your post again. Not sure about the layout of your flats and their house. And just how busy the car park is. How often it is used by car owners/ users coming and going.

Is the car park just for the flats?
Do you have a Private or Social Landlord?

If the noise is really bothering you. You say you sometimes work from home.
Get in touch with your Landlord or Council for advice.

Maybe you can find some kind of resolution.

If not get noise cancelling headphone as a last resort.

I think YABU, better that they stay close to home for safety’s sake and also so much better than them being on devices all day. If you think the noise issue is because the bike needs oiling, why not be neighbourly and offer to help?

They're doing no harm riding on bikes we did that up & down our road as kids leave them be .. go out and say who has a squeaky bike and spray it with wd40 yourself ..
You can't stop kids playing be thankful they're not dealing drugs or smoking in gangs hanging around that is a problem .

'Cycling noisily' - that's a new one.

I spent most of my childhood summer holidays cycling around our estate with others, towing people on roller skates etc.

That was probably the least annoying thing that we did, but people then understood that children being outside was normal.

Edited

Me too.

But with my office, if everyone turned up, there would be no room for everyone. More staff than desks

That doesn't mean that a residential neighbourhood needs to be silent in order to save your company money.

Noise cancelling headphones are the first resort. Op is working in a residentisl area, so the onus is on her that her work does not impact normal residential activities.

This is why there are residential areas and business areas. In residential areas you can expect people to sit outside in their gardens, cook, hang out washing and children to play outside. People can’t stop living perfectly ordinary lives in their own homes because someone is working from home.

and say what? “Hi council, children are playing outside when off school!!! MAKE THEM DESIST!!”
This must be happening what after 4pm or weekends?
what hours do you work?

You're 'concerned they might be bored'? 🤣

Oh come on.

Kids playing out make their own fun and this is the way it should be, rather than expecting adults to organise and curate everything they do.

If you're irritated at the noise then just say so. Squeaky wheels are annoying, but stop pretending you're 'concerned' for them 🙄

I'd go down with a packet of biscuits or some kind of snack have a chat and oil the bikes for them (explain its noisy and also good bike maintenance)

At least you grt some peace and they get a snack thst way

Poor little fuckers. That sounds shit and their parents sound weird.

Errrm offering sweeties/biscuits to children you don't know?

Are you mad? 👀🤦‍♀️

No, this has been a standard part of childhood since bikes were invented....your childhood must have been very deprived.
