AIBU to seek a refund for shoes that developed holes?

To claim for a refund under faulty goods?

just over 5 mths since purchased so well within statutory rights. Worn for 17 weeks (taking school hols into account) and she’s come home with two gigantic holes in the uppers. She said she only noticed them today when a friend pointed it out but I’d imagine they’ve been deteriorating for a while.

Anyone else had issues like this? Anyone got any better recommendations than kickers or did we just get unlucky with a shit pair?

That looks damaged rather than wear and tear /fault

Cosimarocks · 21/05/2026 23:56

From the look of that it’s damage rather than a fault. Can’t be sure of course. But an expected fault would occur in the joins - a seam or the rubber coming away. This looks like a tear across the leather which I suspect would be down to an accident or purposeful misuse or something rather than a fault in the construction or materials.
Might be worth a try, but if caused by damage then it’s a bit like crashing your car and trying to claim back under warranty.

Thank you. I was wondering if the fact they are so badly torn and evenly could be an argument that the leather in the shoe manufacture was poor quality /defective for it to be so severe after such a short period.

i should perhaps add this is on both shoes on either side that this has happened. I think accidental damage would be such a coincidence and I can’t see why she’d purposely do that to her shoes

she just uses them for school walks too and from - the creases on the inside aren’t even that deep so I wouldn’t expect them to split so soon

It’s definitely worth speaking to them and sending the shoes back for inspection, but I suspect they won’t do anything. Always worth a try though. I have a pair of slippers that I love that are pretty ancient. Split at the seams. I contacted the company to ask if they do repairs and if so how much. They asked me to send them for inspection and they fixed them and cleaned them up and said no cost! Always worth asking.

Thanks. I know that within 6 mths they have to prove they weren’t faulty so I’m not entirely sure how that works - probably as you say by inspecting them

I had a pair of trainers that separated at the same point, at about the same age. I emailed the company and they allowed me to replace them with a similar priced shoe. It never hurts to ask.

Even worn daily, shoes should last longer.

ChocolateApples · 22/05/2026 00:42

That looks like wear to me. It's where the shoe bends as you walk. Kickers should last longer than that. I had similar happen once on a pair of DMs.

HDready · 22/05/2026 09:20

I would definitely ask them to look at the shoes/replace. Asda replaced a pair of school boots for me in similar circumstances, and they were considerably cheaper than Kickers.

Branleuse · 22/05/2026 09:27

Kickers have been hit and miss for years. I had 2 pairs of kids shoes where the sole split within weeks and I have never bought them since, despite loving the look
If you still have the receipt, I'd take them back, as real leather shouldn't get a hole like that
