Am I being unreasonable for traffic! I’m looking for a really good page turning book, it doesn’t have to be long, and it can be anything available on the Kindle! I just want to read all weekend, I particularly enjoyed Julie Tudor is not a psychopath recently! Maybe I’m looking for a thriller, can anybody recommend anything that they haven’t been able to put down recently? Much appreciated! Bring on the sunshine!

Ironically a book called Heatwave by Victor Jestin:

https://www.waterstones.com/book/heatwave/victor-jestin/9781471199790

It's a novella - but a total page-turner. I got it in a Waterstones sale a while back - I think they were clearing stock. I have read it about four time since then - even though I know what happens!

For a suspend your disbelief type beach read thriller My Husband’s Wife by Alice Feeney though I preferred None of this is true by Lisa Jewell

Moraxella · 21/05/2026 17:36

Yesteryear

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 21/05/2026 17:37

State of the Union - Douglas Kennedy

I just read the echo chamber by John Boyne, very entertaining easy reading, made me laugh and quite lighthearted. The family it is set around remind me of the family from Schitts creek, it’s a rags to riches to rags story and I’d recommend it for heatwave purposes.

Thanks all! Feels fitting to start with Heatwave 🌞

I immediately thought of another book with heatwave in the title!

Heatwave by Kate Riordan. Good book. A thriller.

Square of Sevens-a bit of a doorstop but very hard to put down

An old one...

The Magus by John Fowles. Set mostly on a greek island, so wonderful atmosphere and descriptions as well as intrigue.

The ending is a bit of a let-down, but the journey is wonderful!

allthegoldicouldeat · Yesterday 13:56

Another vote for the Lisa Jewell books previously mentioned.
Also Yesteryear.
And Frieda McFadden’s three Housemaid books: they’re very quick to become absorbing, as all her books are.

Following!

Strange Sally Diamond. It's a bit daft in places but an easy read. I read it on holiday so I think it would be good for a heatwave weekend!

brokenteddychair · Yesterday 14:17

The Heatwave by Kate Riordan! (Sorry if already suggested, haven’t RTFT)

namechange6766333545544 · Yesterday 14:21

Anything by Freida McFadden. They are trashy thrillers, but they are such page turners and I just never want to put them down!

On a different theme, Summer Sisters by Judy Blume. It’s a young adult coming of age story set in Martha’s Vineyard and it captures summer vibes so beautifully.

BauhausOfEliott · Yesterday 14:38

Some of my heatwave favourites - all gripping, atmospheric, dark and set in roasting hot weather. The first three are set in boiling hot UK summers. Tangerine is about an ex-pat woman living in Tangiers and Little Deaths is set during a heatwave in 1960s New York.

A Fatal Inversion by Barbara Vine
Bitter Orange by Claire Fuller
Water Shall Refuse Them by Lucie McKnight Hardy
Tangerine by Christine Mangan
Little Deaths by Emma Flint

makiandmango · Yesterday 14:44

So thrilled for you - Holly Bourne. Set during a heat wave.

The husbands - Holly Gramazio. Really unique premise and found it hard to put down.

Misknit · Yesterday 14:50

Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O'Farrell (set in the severe heatwave of 1976), The Land in Winter by Andrew Miller (set in the Big Freeze of 1963) if you want something to make your feel cooler.

Not my normal type of reads but I raced through Heart the Lover by Lily King and The Wedding People by Alison Espach recently. Be warned on both of these though you might not warm to some of the characters.
