AIBU to pretend this is a flapper dress for 1920s themed party?

I am going to a 1920s themed birthday party next month which involves looking the part. I would prefer not to have to spend money on a dress I'll never wear again. Could I get away with wearing this one that I already own, instead of the classic "flapper"-style dress? I would add a headband, gloves, beaded necklace etc. Or should I suck it up and buy a dress for my costume?

Yes it would work

Ladyzfactor · 20/05/2026 23:46

It's not flapper, I'm sorry. You could pass as from the time period but not flapper. A simple black knee length dress could be acessorized to be flapper

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 20/05/2026 23:47

It’s a 1920s theme not a flapper theme, so it’d be fine

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/05/2026 23:47

I don’t think it’s anything like one, but equally I think it would be fine to just wear that with 20s accessories.

dorsetdove · 20/05/2026 23:48

Sorry, yes, it doesn't need to be a flapper dress, I was just giving an example. It just needs to be 1920s wear.

Yes it would work for a 1920s theme.
It's a lovely dress imo.

Ophir · 21/05/2026 04:31

Yes, and it’s a lovely dress

TheSlantedOwl · 21/05/2026 05:37

Where’s the dress from? It’s lovely.

I would say the style echoes 1930/40s not 20s but I agree that it would be fine with the accessories

Fiddlesticks1 · 21/05/2026 06:47

Vinted is full of lovely flapper dresses at bargain prices.

JeremiaBoogle · 21/05/2026 07:01

You could wear it to the party. To hit the 1020s brief, add a long string of beads, and a band around your head with a feather In it, finished off with long armed gloves and a cigarette holder (Amazon provide 20s accessory sets.)

You can't pretend it's a flapper dress though - it's nothing like one.

Bitzee · 21/05/2026 07:08

It’s not remotely 1920s in style. Could maybe pull off 1930s but definitely not 1920s. A plain black dress of just about any style if you have one would be easy to accessorise and look more on theme.

Hippywannabe · 21/05/2026 07:18

Just go on Vinted, I have just been to a 1920s themed murder mystery night and got a fab fringed 1920s style dress for £10 from there.

PriscillaQueenoftheKitchen · 21/05/2026 07:19

Not a 1920's style at all, more like 1930's-1940s
Its a nice dress tho.

Waterbaby41 · 21/05/2026 07:20

Lovely dress but no where near the theme.

Manchegomango · 21/05/2026 07:23

Yeah good shout. Add elbow length gloves and a turban.

DancingNotDrowning · 21/05/2026 07:24

Not remotely 1920s but if that doesn’t bother you then it’s a lovely dress.

for a similar party I ordered a fringed beaded dress from Amazon. It was exceptionally good quality - covered in really heavy glass beads and was about £30

FlatErica · 21/05/2026 07:25

No, it’s way off. Sorry.

TerfOnATrain · 21/05/2026 07:31

I would say 1940s and completely wrong era, sorry. This is the sort of dress people in my town wear for the 1940s weekend where they celebrate the end of WW2

Flowerlovinglady · 21/05/2026 07:32

Accessorise it well and it'll be fine. I'm with you I hate to spend money on fancy dress that I'll never wear again.

hellotojason · 21/05/2026 07:36

As others have said that's a 1930/40s style tea dress really - depends how invested in the theme you/ if you care much. It's a lovely dress and could be worn afterwards but not really 1920s at all.

Ilovemsrachel · 21/05/2026 07:38

Totally wrong cut and print for the 1920s but I doubt anyone will give a shit unless they are very precious/a fashion historian? I love that era of fashion so have lots that would work, but I expect you might have things in your wardrobe you haven’t thought of that would be more fitting. Like maybe a skirt and top which you could dress up with beads etc? The other option is to just cover it with a fur coat and style it out!

Yes you can but it wont be 1920 style. I. This period they would never wear such open front they would have fabric inside the triangle with a straight line at the top.

what i would do is find some burgundy velour or gold satin and add it at the back f the front IYSWIM. Just a few stitches at corners and in middle of sides so you can remove it easily, then accessorise with 1920. Remember the gloves up to the elbow, it s evening so the gloves would be opera ones

SliceofTosst · 21/05/2026 07:47

I think accessorised it will be fine. It's a lovely dress.
