Constant poonamis, at the end of my tether

Posting here for traffic. Asking for advice now because I genuinely just don’t know what to do anymore. My little girl is 8 months in a few days, and since she was born we have dealt with near constant poonamis, every poo, even small ones have shot straight up her back. Even now at least 2/3rds of her bowl movements are straight up her back.

it was the same when she was EBF, on comfort formula, and now on normal second stage. We’ve tried every nappy, sizing up vests, changing her straight away it just doesn’t matter. We have the same issue in pull ups as we do normal tabbed nappies. She is weaning now, but swallows very little. I never dealt with this with my first.

We have to change her outfits multiple times a day, I can’t go anywhere without at least 3 sets of clothes for her, we never dealt with this from my first. All her clothes are stained, she’s big and is just going into 9-12 which is when we started saving back clothes from her older sister and it’s heartbreaking watching all her things just get ruined. We are always having to wash the car seat covers, the bouncer, it’s exhausting.

Has anyone dealt with anything similar? If so what helped? I’m tempted to take her to the doctors but feel like we would just be laughed out.

Thanks for reading.

@nanoghost did you cut out all dairy, not just the obvious. Also some people can be allergic to soya as well as dairy, and many dairy alternatives are made of soya.

Yes, my daughter struggles with chronic bowel issues (although never has poonamis) so for a while she was completely dairy and soy free so I knew what I needed to cut out etc. I would be happy to retry cutting out dairy from her diet but I don’t think the doctor would give dairy free formula at this stage

I’ve not got much to say on the poos that hasn’t already been said, but for the stains nothing works better than sunshine! Get the clothes on the line or even just on the windowsill, and you should find they have disappeared by the end of the day.

Oh yes we love a sunny day! Hoping that the weather for the end of the week/ next week doesn’t change and I can wash all her clothes haha!

OP just wanted to say this was exactly my experience with my 2 DCs - the first I could count the number of poonamis on one hand, the second was non stop.

Weaning helped hugely, though my DC2 took a while to get going… also the bouncer was a guaranteed poonami every time so we retired it early.

We ended up with a bucket of ace bleach and hot water in the kitchen at all times for her clothes.

For covers the ones made of fleece worked brilliantly and held everything. You will need more without a tumble drier but line drying works especially this time of year. You don’t need to commit to the whole thing. Just buy one and see if it suits you. Work out how much one nappy costs now, and you can “save” that every time you use the alternative in your mind. We had 3 in nappies at once so financially it was a game changer.

You can buy the aptamil pepti formula without prescription if you suspect CMPA.

The fold at the top of the nappy was a game changer for us. Just fold the back down about an inch (inwards) and it creates a little pocket.

sittingonabeach · Yesterday 10:19

Don’t some nappies have that fold now? Sure I’ve seen an advert for them (DC are adults now but that advert brings back memories 💩)

We used terry nappies from the nappy lady website, with Mother ease Airflow wraps. We folded them using the bat fold.

They were fantastic for us and we only had a few poonami disasters in the whole time we used them.

Mine was like this but it improved once she ate more. I'd definitely try the waterproof cover over a disposable, should help but doesn't add as much laundry as going fully reusable. Or those Splashabout swim nappy covers? Maybe not very comfortable though. Put stained clothes in the sun light.

How many do you think I’d need? My oldest has just turned 2 so also has a lot of washing herself haha

I highly recommend The Nappy Lady, you can email for advice.

I liked terry nappies because they dry really fast, can be folded to fit your child perfectly and can be folded with multiple ones together or with extra liners for more absorption eg at night.

Motherease Airflow wraps were definitely worth the extra money. I had a cheaper brand too which was no good and leaked. Don't hang the wraps in hot sun, I destroyed a wrap that way.

You can get disposable paper liners but I found them useless. Poo just slid off them.

I use the terries to clean the house now. I have also been known to use them as a baby towel, blanket, changing mat and hat 😂

Were there any other symptoms apart from the bad nappies? I did cut out dairy for a few weeks when she was EBF with no change but we might try again. Can imagine it’s difficult to pick her up a dairy free formula now though

From 6 months old you can buy Wysoy formula - soya based, for not much more than standard formula. Although some dairy intolerant also intolerant to soya

Get puppy pads and use them to line the car seat and buggy etc. You can cut slots for the straps.

Member984815 · Yesterday 11:28

Dc2 was like this , it used to reach his hair sometimes, I found pampers to just not be up to the job , I'm not sure if huggies still exist but they seemed to handle the liquid poop better

We use the ones with the fold, I’ll start making an extra fold to see if that helps

Great for the buggy, but it’ll be unsafe to add them to the car seat.

Just in case you aren't, you know the vests have those layered shoulder so you can pull them done, not over the head? In terms of making it a little less grim.
