AIBU to cancel a family holiday over norovirus concerns?

Today I booked a family weekend trip to a holiday park for this weekend. However this evening I’ve noticed a terrible amount of norovirus claims on a local forum. Apparently the park is riddled with it.

I don’t think i can get a refund.I have a severe fear of vomiting. And I have young children.

would you accept loss and cancel, or risk potentially getting unwell? Or take the risk?

I would go , take a pack of hand anti bac wipes and a packet for the toilet, also dont maybe eat there. Cross contamination is spread by people touching dirty surfaces, not washing hands and not following hygiene rules when preparing food , I would go with this in mind. dont mingle do your own thing .

Does the place have a dishwasher?

We got norovirus in a ski resort ( complete waste of holiday money) and I think it was because the bowls and cups were contaminated.

But a dishwasher would have sterilised them.

I’d go. You can catch Norovirus anywhere, my kids picked it up at school last year.
Your children shouldn’t miss out on experiences because of your anxiety, if it’s that bad perhaps you should seek some kind of therapy.

Practice good handwashing - hand sanitiser doesn’t kill noro. Wash hands before eating and after touching high traffic areas like buttons in lift, door handles, shared food utensils (like a buffet) etc. No eating with your hands, especially the kids. You just need to minimise risk.

If a D&V bug is present I would not go.

I wouldn't go. I also have emetophobia. It's not wise to put yourself in a situation that could potentially worsen your phobia without therapy in full swing, especially if it's already severe.

How is that fair in kids and the rest of the family though, if one person’s phobia rules everyone’s lives?

We have one child with OCD, severe anxiety, several phobia’s etc. They are now an adult. Of course it adversely impacted everyone everyday, and we all felt for them. However, no way we let that rule everyone’s lives, that’s not fair in the family as a whole. They came on holidays and had to deal with stuff, had their meltdowns etc, but to a certain extent they had to be left to it if it meant limiting everyone otherwise.

Is.It Butlins where you will be amongst lots.of.people all the time?.if.so, do as PP have suggested with cleaning the crockery/accommodation/hand wash regularly
If.it.Is Haven I'd use the accommodation as a base and go out and about the site

butternut123 · 20/05/2026 06:51

Could you go and just sue your accommodation but go off site instead and not use the communal areas? That’s what I’d do

Then I'd go, clean everything like it is covid times and avoid the main complex. But we would do that anyway. Probably best to avoid the swimming pool but see if there is a council pool nearby if you like swimming.
I wouldn't cancel especially with the weather forecast so good!

Difficult to know as I’d be concerned about whether the previous guests in the apartment we were moving into had been infected.

How much will you lose and how unhappy will the rest of the family be?

Emetophobia sucks, but so does norovirus with young children, even without it.
