I’m off on a solo holiday to southern Europe this summer. I’ve never travelled to a hot location before alone, so trying to be prepared. I’m going to stock up over the next few weeks using the boots recycling scheme to build up points (with a view to purchasing a red light mask in the Boxing Day sales)

  • Soap
  • Body moisturiser
  • Body oil
  • After sun
  • Foot cream
  • Shaving gel

  • Anti-chafe balm

Face

  • Rhode face wash
  • Rhode glazing milk
  • Rhode barrier butter
  • Facial SPF 50
  • Retinol
  • Rhode spot patches

First aid/health

If your entire goal is to travel light I agree, but I like to have the things I use at home, abroad!

Fair enough, but you are taking a lot and realistically where will you find time for a holiday when you are spending so much time on beauty products and routine.

Loosen up your expectations, yes bring the vital stuff, but honestly love - different shower gel for bits and pits and the rest, AND soap, and hair products and shave gel and this and that cream? Like I said, you are you and I am just observing, but you will honestly regret not having room in your case coming home for all the fabulous products available in the pharmacies! It is like Aladdin's Cave....

Dubhloch · 19/05/2026 20:39

Depends how big all your products weigh and your weight allowance or how heavy you want your bags when you’re there. I was recently very surprised how heavy a load of individually light products come to!

Seems a lot to me (but then I don’t even know what some of the things are 🙈). Also why do you need body moisturiser, oil, and after sun personally I’d just take one. I’d also not take 2 of anything. Depends where you go but unless you’re going off the beaten track there’ll be chemists and supermarkets.

Newmeagain · 19/05/2026 20:40

Wow - how are you going to carry all this stuff? Are you taking multiple suitcases?

Dubhloch · 19/05/2026 20:45

Trumpton · 19/05/2026 17:21

I was so glad I packed Compeed plasters.
We do a fair bit of walking at least 20,000 steps per day and 15 mins into a walk I noticed a hot spot on one foot. Totally ripped open blister from nowhere! Hobbled back to hotel and put on a Compeed and have walked everyday since with no problems.
I always pack Imodium. Just in case.

Edited

These were two of my “must take” recently!

fantam · 19/05/2026 20:46

Are you doing a Shirley Valentine trip? Costas will carry your suitcase with all your heavy stuff in it, so bring whatever you want!

Seriously, I hope you have a great trip. Do tell us where (which country) so we can live through your adventure....

Squirrelblanket · 19/05/2026 20:46

Do not take body oil, especially if you have sensitive skin. In a hot country it can trap sweat and cause severe prickly heat. Don't ask me how I found this out. 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

IDasIX · 19/05/2026 20:54

You haven’t said what kind of holiday you're planning, how you’re getting there, and where you’ll be staying.

Flying with hold luggage to a nice resort hotel and staying there for 10 days is very different to taking a backpack on a train and moving around remote locations, both in terms of what will be available to you and how easy it will be to carry the entire contents of a medium sized Boots.

Dubhloch · 19/05/2026 20:55

fantam · 19/05/2026 20:29

Sorry to say this OP, but the amount of stuff you are taking in the toiletries/sun protection department is mad! I know you are saving Boots points and buying lots of stuff, but you can buy the stuff anyway, you don't need to be abroad to use it! Decant into small containers, do that with most things.

You do not need anything in the medical department unless you are going to Outer Mongolia or Antarctica. Every pharmacy in Europe is a delight, and the pharmacists are like doctors. You will get everything you need, IF you need it, including the most amazing creams and items designed for hot weather skin.

Vital stuff to me is

Prescribed meds (in hand luggage)
Electronics
Chargers
Power bank
Plug adaptors
Ear plugs/noise cancelling headphones/ear buds
Eye mask
Magnesium Glycinate (to knock me out at night)

Bare minimum toiletries in small decanted containers. You know what you need.
Bare minimum make up, a bit of bronzer, blush and lip is all you need, anything else will slide off your face in the heat.

Passport
Phone

Swimwear
Other garments
Shoes.
Bag.

You are so right, European pharmacies are AMAZING and the service you get is equally so. I use La Roche Posay, readily available. I actually like to have a reason to go into these pharmacies they are so nice!

Rubyfw5 · 19/05/2026 20:59

It may be on a different list but just in case...don't forget your toothbrush!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 19/05/2026 21:10

I’d go for a larger size once a day SPF like ultrasun, and a small spray that can be used on face to keep in my bag (I am very particular about spf too having lost a family member to skin cancer)

I’d ditch shower gel and take soap - lemon or coconut, to help as mosquito deterrent. I prefer bar soap - gives more of a squeaky clean all over, essential for washing off the sun cream.

jungle formula roll on (not spray), again for mosquitos.

I’d start taking antihistamines a few weeks before you go, to minimise reactions to bites (can you tell this is a focus for my travels)

I’d skip retinol for a few weeks if out in hot sun all the time, assuming you’re not from a similar climate

compeed stick is brilliant for preventing blisters, especially with sandals, just apply it to any likely blister areas. (But take the plasters too).

a really good lip mask for overnight - I like this one https://www.boots.com/laneige-lip-sleeping-mask-20g-10348503

Facial skin care - moisturising layers matters to me in hot weather, I’d add in a hydrating mist.

I take a lot of toiletries on holiday, but I do stick to travel size for face stuff (decanting from bigger bottles).

hair cap for the shower if you don’t want to wash or rinse it twice a day.

i wouldn’t layer after sun and body moisturiser, i would just stick with the body moisturiser. I might take a travel size bottle of aloe Vera in case of burning though.

Tweezers.

A decent hand cream.

I wouldn’t bother with foot cream - I normally get a pedicure before the holiday and just use body moisturiser.

I think it is relevant that 96% of the votes are saying YABU.

It really is a ridiculous list.

If all the items are full size I’d reckon several kgs just on toiletries. The 200gs here and there really add up!

TheDenimPoet · 19/05/2026 23:02

Period products, even if you're not due on. Our bodies do love to surprise us at the worst possible times! (Assuming, of course, you generally menstruate).

One suitcase plus carry on! It’s really not that much

I admit I overpack at times but I don’t think a lot of this is over packing? I carry things like players and blister plasters everyday anyway, so it would be unusual to not pack them for a holiday!

Wow my gosh that looks like a lot of ‘stuff’ for the sake of buying and packing ‘stuff’! So many duplicates.
I’m relatively low maintenance at home and on holiday moreso. I do tend to take my own shower gel and shampoo rather than rely on what’s there.
Definitely don’t bother with the retinol although I see you’ve noted that.
I mean you seem happy to be a packhorse so crack on! I leave the house day to day with none of any of that, phone and keys does me.

I wouldn’t say I’ll be a pack horse. Most of this fits into a small Space NK bag that I carry with me everyday, so I don’t think it’ll be that different! Things like the body oil I’ll take a travel size of, so it’s not as much as people think!

OP, I posted my suggestions up thread, but I just wanted to say, I think if you want to carry with your skincare routine abroad and take your products with you, you should crack on, but I noticed you said that you hadn’t travelled to a hot country before so I would really think about adjusting your routine for that. You’ve already noted that you will skip the retinol - I’m a big skincare routine fan, but in a hot country I stick to cleanser (double cleansing at night), some kind of hydrating mist (I like Sunday Riley pink drink, a good moisturiser, face spf. I take a can of ultrasun spray spf to carry in my handbag too in case I need it during the day. Lightweight and moisturising is key otherwise I really break out in the heat. A lip mask at night to stop my lips drying out. A tinted moisturiser instead of a heavier base too (I go for erborian cc cream).

No, I said I’d not travelled to a hot country ALONE before. I’ve always gone with people who have handled all the toiletries (aka my family) and I’ve just had to take my skincare and makeup

OP posts:
CrushingOnRubies · Today 07:02

For 10 days I’d be tempted to take just one big bottle of sun cream. Can always get more if you run out.

what sort of accommodation are you staying in? If in a hotel just use the soap provided. If camping then yes you need to take your own.
