According to SIL it is

How odd. Mind you would it do any more harm than water? It doesn't have any caffeine in it at least. Didn't ff so no experience of giving anything other than milk to babies!

southernbelle77 · 22/06/2008 07:05

Sounds a bit odd to me, but maybe there is something I don't know of!

I used to put it in dd's bath to make nappy rash better if that makes any difference

BouncingTurtle · 22/06/2008 07:11

A 2 mo baby's tummy is tiny though, surely it is not a good idea to fill it up with anything but milk? Unless the baby is constipated?

yaz2 · 22/06/2008 07:12

I don't know about chamomile tea but in getmany it was very common to give babies cooled fennel tea. You could even buy fennel tea bags especially for babies in just about any place you could get baby food. I saw alot of people giving it to babies too just like water.

BouncingTurtle · 22/06/2008 07:14

Yes I have one of them fennel teabags, not used it yet. But I don't think they should be used on a baby this young.

LIZS · 22/06/2008 07:57

I used fennel tea for dd who had reflux frm time to time and hen the dc's had tummy upsets. A camomile version is also sold as suitable for babies in Europe(Milupa market it). Only a couple of oz though , not a whole bottle , and not as a general rule just when unsettled.

LIZS · 22/06/2008 07:57

oh and the midwives providede it when still in hospital for newborns !

Love2bake · 22/06/2008 08:04

Never heard of anyone doing that.

Buda · 22/06/2008 08:07

Very common in Europe. I tried DS with the fennel tea when he was a baby (not 2 months though) but he didn't like it.

McDreamy · 22/06/2008 08:07

I thought tea was a big no no becuase of the tannins in it, they interfere with absorption. I remember DH and I having this discussion when he wanted to give DC's tea when they were toddlers.

Maybe this isn't the case with herbal tea?

LIZS · 22/06/2008 08:10

Fennel and camomile teas are more infusions and don't contain tannin unlike black tea.

McDreamy · 22/06/2008 08:13

Thank you LIZS

TheMadHouse · 22/06/2008 08:20

I was recomended both fennel and calomine "tea" for DS1 as he was a really coliccy baby. He was also formula fed.

It is really common on the contenant.

I only gave a tiny bit and it really did work to settle DS1 who was a really upset baby.

yaz2 · 22/06/2008 08:45

I give my toddler 22 months cammomile tea as its quite soothing for sore throats etc and he loves it with a bit of honey. I don't know about really young babies but it does seem to help sooth him if he has a sore throat or cough etc.

Rosa · 22/06/2008 08:48

In Italy its used regularly. The milupa and other ready mix ones are sugar based but you can get the baby infusions ( no sugar)- When dd was sick -probably about 6mths I gave her cammomile tea on a tea spoon as directed by her doctor !

FrannyandZooey · 22/06/2008 08:50

it can help with digestive problems and is soothing and gentle on the stomach
it doesn't have anything harmful in it, but could interfere with bfing like anything else you might give a young baby
best to stick to breastmilk at this age really

Flynnie · 22/06/2008 10:06

I used it with both dds from 3mths...works so much better then teething gels as its soothing and they are both the picture of health so it was obviously okay for them.

maggymay · 22/06/2008 10:13

my midwife recomended it for my son when he was born(he is 16 now) it was very good and you could get it over here in granules for babies he was really collicy and it was the only thing that helped

justageek · 22/06/2008 10:15

i used to give my youngest sips of cammomile tea, she had silent reflux and i found not only did it seem to settle the reflux a bit, it also calmed her down, so i kept it for about 30 mins before nap times. Only ever little sips at a time though, any more than that and it would have put her off her milk. She was about 3 months then.

lucyellensmum · 22/06/2008 10:26

blimey - i wish i had thought of doing that!! I never would have though because i cant stand herbal teas, they taste like dishwater. Still, i might introduce DD, she is 2.9 and still has a milk bottle at bedtime. Chammomile tea? That promotes sleep right? GOT to be a good thing. I think its quite a good idea to give to babies as they will grow to enjoy it, i imagine its an aquired taste. Have no idea if it is suitable or not.

What i can't understand is my SIL who gives her little lad a bottle with REAL tea in it, plus sugar at bed time. I mean, doesn't she WANT him to sleep. I cannot understand the need to give toddlers tea, caffiene = a no no, for obvious reasons, plus its a diuretic so possibility of wetting. tannins, interfere with iron absorbsion (sp) and have you ever notice what it does to your tea cups?

thequietone · 22/06/2008 10:40

I'm in Germany - DS2 has fennel tea occasionally when he has wind. You can actually feel the bubbles burst when he drinks it if you rest your hand on his tummy, and he relaxes instantly. I give him the normal infusions though, as Nestler have bought out a version for babies...what a con!!!

CrushWithEyeliner · 22/06/2008 10:48

nothing wrong with this at all - it is amazing for tummy upsets and relaxing. DD was brought up on it with a bit of honey after 1. Magic magic stuff

CrushWithEyeliner · 22/06/2008 10:50

but on a baby that age I would only give a few oz

timewaster · 22/06/2008 11:50

when we were visiting in-laws in Tunisia, ds was very colicky and they gave him some fennel tea on a spoon, they made it with the seeds and boiled it up with water. I was a bit nervous at first as wasn't exactly sure what it was (they had shown me the herb in the garden and i thought it was fennel but i am not much of a gardener so wasn't sure) but it worked like magic. Would recommend people give it a go for colic/wind. It was only a tiny amount though.

MKG · 22/06/2008 12:11

Works great. My in-laws in Mexico swear by it.
