How to stand up to the optician and walk away with only a copy of my prescription?

Off for an eye test this morning because I’m getting headaches at work when looking at my computer for long stretches. I do not want to purchase glasses there because they’re extortionate and I’m probably going to get them online. How do I make sure I get a copy of my prescription? Posting here for traffic

Just ask.

Faythe · 18/05/2026 10:01

You take the copy of the prescription they give you, pay for your eye test, say thank you and leave.

KeyLimeCake · 18/05/2026 10:01

I always say "I don't have time to look at glasses now but I'll be back".

I never go back.

Just ask for the prescription. You don't need to explain or make an excuse.
If pushed, say you don't have time today to choose frames but you'll take the prescription please and thank you.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 18/05/2026 10:02

Just say you need DH to make any decisions, then giggle loudly and leave

Gardenpleasure · 18/05/2026 10:04

As far as I'm aware they have to give you a copy of the prescription. You shouldn't need to ask.
I go to an independent opticians but I always take the prescription to Specsavers.

msbevvy · 18/05/2026 10:04

When I bought glasses online they wanted to know my pupil distance. This wasn't on my prescription. I had to go back to the opticians for it and they very grudgingly Told me it.

HoraceCope · 18/05/2026 10:05

ime they just give them to you anyway
no issues at all

OldieButBaddie · 18/05/2026 10:06

Why not have the eye test at the place you want to buy the glasses!
Easier all round

I think firmoo have a printable ruler on their website to get this! I’ve done that before

I’ll be buying them online from a cheaper shop as I can’t afford the £250 specsavers always seem to try and charge me

My optician actually suggested that I could get them online, obviously in hushed tones, but he was clearly more than happy to give me the prescription knowing I was going to buy online.

ScotchBonnet74 · 18/05/2026 10:10

Legally they have to give you a copy of the prescription. I always say I will be returning at a later date with a friend to help me choose.

My last glasses from Specsavers were about £30 🤷

FruitFlyPie · 18/05/2026 10:11

You have to just be ready for them to be a little rude and not worry about it. I asked (very politely) for a copy of the prescription, the sales person said rudely and aggressively "you're just going to go somewhere and get the glasses!". I said "well yes probably". If they are rude about it, who cares, let them be rude.

PennySweeet · 18/05/2026 10:11

I had to be very firm with my opticians over this for the same reason.

I was just honest and said I wanted to buy them online because they were cheaper, with more variety.

So I'd tell them to email me the prescription, although one time I had to keep ringing to insist.

Because she wants to buy them online?

I was going to say - is it really worth getting them online? Will they fit them correctly, adjust if needed, guarantee you are fitted well?

To be honest yes. I did it for ages while I was at uni and I never had a single issue

I went to Specsavers last month and they automatically gave me the prescription without me asking. They then asked if I wanted to choose frames (and seemed surprised when I said yes). It was about £70.

AImportantMermaid · 18/05/2026 10:19

You or your organisation are paying for the prescription. The opticians are not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. They’re getting paid to provide a service and you’re completely entitled to it without any further engagement. Just say ‘No thank you. I don’t want to get them yet’.

WorthySloth · 18/05/2026 10:19

I usually say I need a second opinion on them then go round the corner to the independent glasses place and order from there.

I’ve looked online and with my prescription etc it isn’t much cheaper than the place I go to and I’m happy with the glasses and service I’ve had there.

Moveoverdarlin · 18/05/2026 10:20

I went to Specsavers recently. They handed me the prescription after the test and told me to have a little browse and someone will be with me shortly to help me choose. I browsed for about 5 seconds and walked out.

Yes. And a lie, but you do you.
However it is not their prescription, it is yours.
Wondering how you'd cope with a car salesman.
