To brush my five year olds teeth for her?

I don’t trust that she’ll do it properly otherwise. Especially the backs

Of course!

JustaDream · 17/05/2026 18:41

YANBU. I stopped doing this for my DC around this age, as per dentist advice, and she ended up with problems i.e. cavities etc.

Do it until you trust that they can do it but maybe not until they're 21 because that would be weird.

Natsku · 17/05/2026 18:42

You're supposed to still be brushing her teeth at this age, why would you think that could be unreasonable?

VIII · 17/05/2026 18:42

Totally normal to let them do it and then go over it. Surely most parents of 5 year olds do that.

sleepandcoffee · 17/05/2026 18:42

I still do my 8 year olds teeth at night and he does his own in the morning , 5 is definitely too young to stop in my opinion

OfDragonsDeep · 17/05/2026 18:42

Of course, I have a 6 yo and no way would I trust him to brush them properly.

AllTheChaos · 17/05/2026 18:43

My dentist told me to keep doing it until I was sure she was doing it properly, and to oversee brushing till DD was at least 10

youalright · 17/05/2026 18:43

Yes you're supposed to i let mine do it first then I did them after

TrixieFatell · 17/05/2026 18:44

I helped them to brush their teeth until around 7, and checked them until I was confident they were doing it correctly. This was on the advice of their dentist. Edited to say this was until around the age of 10

Most friends seem to have their children brush own teeth, and I’ve just seen a post where someone’s three year old brushes their teeth, made me wonder if I was babying her a bit.

A few evenings a week I do DD(8) a second time after she's finished and then chewed a plaque disclosing tablet as per the dentist advice.

We stopped cleaning her teeth for her at about 5 and it was too soon.

How would you know that they brush their own teeth? I can't say this has ever come up as a topic of conversation? Confused

BeanMeUp · 17/05/2026 18:46

I took my 8 year old to the dentist recently. She asked if I brushed his teeth for him. I said yes, she said it shows. He does them himself (with supervision) in the morning, then I do the evening. There's no way my DC would do a thorough enough job by himself, especially with a manual brush (he won't tolerate an electric one). Doesnt matter if he ends up going to school with a bit of shampoo still in his hair, or not as clean as he could be after a shower, but dental health is one thing we won't chance.

Manuiio · 17/05/2026 18:46

Children aren't generally capable of brushing their own teeth until 7 years of age.

She may well brush the teeth of the three year old after. I have videos of my children brushing their teeth at a young age but I always brushed them after they had a go.

Oh, OK, I guess it didn’t happen then.

I was genuinely curious. I wouldn't have a clue if any of my friends kids brushed theirs first and their parents did it after. If their parents did it or if they did it by themselves with no parental input. Confused

Then I guess your friends are just too lazy to look after their children's teeth. Ask your dentist if you're not sure but I promise you that still brushing your child's teeth is a really good thing to do and its not babying them.

tourdefrance · 17/05/2026 19:01

My dentist said to keep brushing their teeth 'as long as they will let you'. So I did and it was quite a bit past age 5.

They have no fillings as teenagers unlike me.

Right but do I need to record the conversation verbatim

it went something like

‘Mabel has been a bit more challenging than normal,’
’yes, Olivia too.’
’iris has been refusing to brush her teeth in the morning ‘
’so has Mabel.’

happy? Smile

DD6 brushes her in morning, whilst I "supervise". .I do the night one.

She has always had an electric brush.

Quite happy thanks. Just wondered if we were normal or not. It seems we are (apart from the most peculiar conversation topics we apparently have!)

Me and my friends know all about each others children's teeth brushing habits 😅

Fatiguedwithlife · 17/05/2026 19:25

I brush my nearly10yo daughters. She just doesn’t do them properly otherwise (even with oral B)

I don't think it's weird to talk about these things with your friends - I have a group of mum friends I talk to every day and we know so much about how each other raises their children and often ask if others are doing the same thing still (kids all the same age)
