So sick of mouth ulcers

I get one maybe once a month or every other month. Sometimes mild, sometimes severe like the one I’ve got now. It’s not just the localised pain it’s the headache, fatigue and raised glands - my body is clearly fighting it and that takes its toll. I’ve tried everything - only use sensodyne toothpaste, use anti bac mouthwash, all the topical treatments you can buy. I had a full blood count done 6 months ago for something else and they all came back normal.

My dentist referred me to the hospital last year and they were very dismissive. Basically just said some people are susceptible to them and I should work on my stress levels 🙄

When I don’t have one I kind of forget how bad they are. But then I get a nasty one like I have on my inside cheek at the moment and I feel rotten for a week and think I can’t carry on with this. It’s been happening on/off for years.

Since taking supplements for my general immune system I haven't had any mouth ulcers. These are the key nutrients:
Vitamin B12
Folic Acid (Vitamin B9)
Vitamins B2 and B3
Vitamin C
Iron
Zinc

I used to suffer terribly since childhood with mouth ulcers, nothing helped. Oddly since hitting my fifties they are less of an issue, although can get them occasionally when run down. I remember a particularly bad break out while doing some exams for my degree and for some reason in desperation I placed a cotton wool ball against it overnight- yes I realise it could be a choking hazard- but I was desperate for relief. The next morning it had largely disappeared. Having looked it up it seems if you can keep it dry and stop the saliva action next to a mouth ulcer it helps a lot. Just not a very practical solution though.

Exclude gluten from your diet.

Double check that the Sensodyne you use is SLS free. Not all are.

I suffered terribly before a dental hygienist mentioned a chemical in some toothpastes. I’ve never had another since changing.

Get acyclovir tablets from the gp.

Aciclovir will not help with mouth ulcers

VanGoSunflowers · 02/06/2026 12:49

Do not trust NHS results that haven’t flagged up deficiencies. The reference levels are always too low. A GP will tell you you’re ferritin is fine if it’s 20 but it should be 75-100 (for example)

Check your bloods and get them in to an optimum range. I have found low B12 to be the culprit for mouth ulcers and you can pay to have private B12 jabs for £29. I have one roughly every 2 months (Google Vitajab)

RoseField1 · 02/06/2026 12:49

I take two probiotics every day and they help. Lactobacillus reuteri and lactobacillus rhamnosus. I buy them on eBay and since taking them I would estimate that only 30% of sore bits actually turn into ulcers when previously it was 100%

Diet!

RoseField1 · 02/06/2026 12:51

I forgot to say I also take zinc

EvolvedAlready · 02/06/2026 12:53

Pop some tea tree oil directly on them. It gives some relief for a bit and can clear the not so serious ones.

Luckypoppy · 02/06/2026 12:53

Try B6. It worked for me. X

Diet!

Diet how? Be specific about what works for you?

I used to get them a lot in my teens then they disappeared. I’d get blood tests but look at supplements.

Yes me too in my teens and early 20s. My diet was a bit rubbish back then to be fair.

NandorDeLaurentis · 02/06/2026 13:05

Go gluten free and use tepe SLS free toothpaste.

I was like you, now (even postpartum) theyre largely gone, and even when I do get them, they're nothing like they used to be. I couldn't eat, talk, function when I was having a flare up.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 02/06/2026 13:12

Do you get them in similar places each time? I suffered for years, every few weeks for about 10 years. they were huge to the point I could barely talk when I had them. I was low on B12 but even fixing that didn’t fix them. I had a lot of dental work done, 4 teeth removed and braces and I haven’t had a single ulcer since. The only thing I can think of was it was pressure points in my mouth.

Corsodyl mouthwash helps but water it down as it can discolour your teeth if you use it regularly. What I would do when I had absolutely had enough and I’m not sure I recommend it- pure vodka straight on the ulcer. It’s absolute agony but afterwards it’s completely numb and gives you a bit of temporary relief.

SelfSeededAsh · 02/06/2026 14:53

Do you eat crusty bread/sourdough toast with a very sharp crust? My mouth gets all cut up when I eat that and the cuts turn into ulcers.

giddykipper3 · 01/06/2026 10:05

I will pick up some zinc and vitamin c today. Also have the Lysine tablets arriving too. I only use SLS free toothpaste. I have had a recent full blood test for something unrelated that didn’t flag up any deficiencies. I just need to find something that makes life more bearable when they happen or ideally reduces them altogether.

I can point you to some paste stuff i've always found great for when I get them.

Only problem is that don't sell it in the UK, any more, but there is a seller on ebay that does.

Message me on here if you would like a link,

CoverIt · 02/06/2026 15:27

I had some tests recently and because they were looking to rule out Lupus, one of the questions I was asked was whether I got mouth ulcers.
Have you ever had tests for that, or has your GP ever suggested Lupus? It’s not one of the main symptoms and lots of other causes could be responsible, but if all else fails might be worth looking into.

I think my diet was pretty standard back then but 5 a day wasn’t a thing back.
