To think always clearing a credit card is not typical?

I tend to pay my credit card off in full each month so I never pay interest but it’s made me wonder how common that actually is. Given how many people carry credit card balances, it feels like always clearing it might not be the norm.

I'm not sure which way you are supposed to vote but yes I clear mine monthly.

Spacestory · 16/05/2026 13:59

Yes cleared monthly here. Mad not to

Gettingbysomehow · 16/05/2026 13:59

No of course its not typical. People dont or cant live within their means and often just cant pay it off.
I dont have a credit card. I have an emergency fund that I use in emergencies and pay myself back asap.

FatCatSkinnyRat · 16/05/2026 14:00

i clear mine

7238SM · 16/05/2026 14:00

Mine has always been paid off in full each month. I only spend what I can afford and have never paid interest on it.

princesspeppax · 16/05/2026 14:02

Cleared monthly here to

CoverLikelyZebra · 16/05/2026 14:02

I clear mine every month because I know from experience that otherwise I spiral into debt that takes years to get out of

IAMFLUFF · 16/05/2026 14:02

Paid off in full every month without fail, even if I have to raid my savings to do so.

Disturbia81 · 16/05/2026 14:04

If I could afford to clear it I wouldn’t be using it. Mine are maxed out just surviving each day, sadly like so many.

CreepyCrepePaper · 16/05/2026 14:04

Mine is paid in full every month. Tbh I pay bits off throughout the month too.

YoullWishYourLifeAway · 16/05/2026 14:05

I rarely use mine but, when I do, I clear it.

However, in the past when DC were small, I know DH did have a cc with a balance of several thousand pounds on, it took us nearly 3 years to get straight. It terrified me and I felt we were one car repair or one boiler breakdown away from it all becoming unmanageable. Life was just expensive, we weren’t frivolous, the bulk of the debt was a private medical treatment bill and we couldn’t pay it all at once.

HollyhockDays · 16/05/2026 14:06

Mine is. But like a pp it has been a very hard lesson to learn. Loads of people are constantly juggling not enough income v too much going out. And have no buffer to try and build up an emergency fund.

ReignOfError · 16/05/2026 14:09

I pay one of mine as I go along. I only use it for buying online, so just transfer money to it either weekly for small purchases, or immediately for larger amounts.

I use my other credit card when I’m overseas (as it’s free) and pay it off as soon as it falls due.

OnionFishDiamond · 16/05/2026 14:16

Paid off in full each month usually for my day to day credit card.

We’ve done some renovations though and I got a 0% credit card to spread some of the cost. Interest starts accruing September, it was £4k and now around £1500 so I’ll just make sure I pay that off by September :)

tilypu · 16/05/2026 14:16

I don't currently have one, but when I did I cleared it in full every month

Blundl · 16/05/2026 14:18

Yes, I tend to use it for everything for the rewards and pay off each month. I think it is more common to do this as you get older, I didn't when I was young.

moggiek · 16/05/2026 14:22

Cleared monthly.

AmazingGreatAunt · 16/05/2026 14:22

Another one, who clears cards monthly. My whole family does, including parents.
Generally I use mine for things like booking hotels or flights, so these are budgeted in advance. I do not actually use it for "credit" or for day-to-day expenses.
If I need something urgently I use savings and if I want something or know that I will need something in 6 months I save up.

ThisSunnyBee · 16/05/2026 14:24

Clear monthly and use to get points/ air miles etc

fluffiphlox · 16/05/2026 14:24

Cleared every month. It’s a very expensive way of borrowing if you don’t.

rainbowunicorn22 · 16/05/2026 14:26

we had to get a card to pay for emergency van repairs but paid off end of month when we got paid. The wages were paid in too late for us to pay van repairs and we had to rely on a credit card. after paying it off we destroyed it

FoundAUserNameDownTheSofa · 16/05/2026 14:27

I googled it. Just over half (in the uk) clear their cards monthly. About 6% only pay the minimum payments.

Thingcanonlygetbetter · 16/05/2026 14:28

Mine paid every month.
My husband he does all his spending on interest free credit cards - he could have 35k on them. But he only pays the minimum payment and then pays the rest into a high interest bank account and makes money from the banks money

notacooldad · 16/05/2026 14:28

I always pay before its due and in full.
I only use the card for cc protection so as soon as I've used it I do a bank transfer.

Crwysmam · 16/05/2026 14:28

I use all of my cards like charge cards that are paid off in full each month. I have misused credit in the past and I didn’t enjoy being in debt. I have an excellent credit rating and from time to time use the facility on a couple of cards to split the payment into monthly payments to maintain the credit rating.

It unlikely that I’ll need a loan in the future but it’s always reassuring to have that facility. I’ve worked hard to build up a big insurance savings account so I don’t need to take out loans for cars or larger purchases.

Im also from an older generation where you saved and paid rather than buy now pay later. It means that I often talk myself out of buying stuff I don’t need. Credit is readily available because it makes a lot of money for those who provide it. It’s not for our convenience, I used to kid myself to that I was paying for the convenience but realised I was just paying to create profit.
