AIBU to ask for the cheapest half-term day out ideas for teenagers?

To ask for your very cheapest day out recommendations for half term. Points for the most inventive way to amuse two teenage boys who only want to play sport or game.

we were supposed to be going away for a week all inclusive but we just can’t make the numbers work so are going to go away in the summer instead.

as I have reallocated all funds to our summer holiday I’m going to try and do the absolute cheapest week off possible.

I know local park picnic etc but I’m looking for inventive tips to entertain.

I’ve amused both kids for two weeks before on an absolute shoestring budget with packed lunches every day and local walks and feeding ducks but I need some inspiration and unusual ideas.

Where are you roughly?

midgetastic · 15/05/2026 18:19

Can you give them each a budget for a day and see what they come up with?

MigGirl · 15/05/2026 18:19

Surely you leave them to assume themselves once teenagers.

I know I'll have to drag DS out at some point over half term or he'll stay glued to his computer. But we will probably go to the cinema (using tesco vouchers) and I'll take him to the local board game caff as he loves board games.

There is a computer museum near us which is quite cheap so if it's raining we may go there or as we are close to the beach (about 1 hour away), if the weather is nice we will go for fish and chips and a play in the arcades which he loves. Plus I'll drag him for a walk along the prom. Otherwise I'll leave him to it and get on with my own thing.

Skate park...ok you need a skateboard but you can get a cheap one...I think I got my DD one for £15

KitKatPitPat · 15/05/2026 18:21

Geocaching might be an entertaining way to go for a walk?

Or you can sometimes download treasure hunt sort of walks for your area.

But as teenagers they might just want to hang out with their friends?

Agreed. My teens have to be dragged out, it's always relucantly and they mope around for the most part so I don't often bother. The cinema is a good shout, sometimes bowling or I'll send them swimming. Museums and such - forget it for the most part, they think they're lame.

Any foot golf courses near you Op. Good fun and reasonably priced, you can take your own football to navigate the course .

Ooh yes computer museum. We are midlands . That and a packed lunch would kill a few hours.

I’ve just remembered one of them has a magnet so magnet fishing!

Ive had to accept that school holidays are just not the same now mine are teenagers.
They very often want to rest and lie in during school holidays. My eldest goes out with friends all the time. Isn't interested in spending time with us. Daughter happy to entertain herself. We are going the trafford centre on the Wednesday. Nothing else

WonderingWanda · 15/05/2026 18:27

Some of these might be cheap if you have the kit / or live close enough. Would involve packed lunch, parking or transport money.

Bike ride / mountain biking of you have bikes.
Go for a hike, potentially wild camp.
Public transport to a free museum
Trip to a beach paddle boarding / surfing / body boarding or just a swim
Bouldering

maddiemookins16mum · 15/05/2026 18:28

Look at the Geocaching and Adventure Lab apps - they’re great fun.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/05/2026 19:33

Mine mostly hangs out in the comic/pokemon/manga shop with his friends. If he buys anything, it’s with his own money. Sometimes they go to the bouldering wall.

Do teenagers really want to go for "a lovely day out" with their parents? Can't they just hang out with their mates?
And they may even have homework to do!

BlueMum16 · 15/05/2026 19:42

Depends how old.

Swimming - waterworld or similar
Blackpool - penny slots and fish and chips
Beach/park flying kites
Bike riding in local forest
Museums are free in lots of places

We love a day at a castle /Conwy and walking the walls (free) and fish and chips at the end.

If the weather is alright can they compete for who can pick the best picnic spot? Ours was split between Malham Cove and Matlock Bath.
