AIBU to expect an update after attending a job interview

Was contacted directly by a company to apply for a role: sent CV in, had initial chat, and then a formal interview. 2 weeks later, not heard anything back. I’ve sent a polite follow up email: but not heard anything back.

Since starting job hunting after redundancy last year; I’ve found a few companies do this: multiple interview stages: and then nothing : no feedback; no “sorry; role has went to someone else”.

I appreciate it’s an employers market, and literally hundreds apply to each role: I don’t expect a response to every application; but when I’ve went to the effort of preparing for and attending an interview, I think it’s only fair that the company provides an update

YANBU. A quick email at a minimum. But unfortunately it’s a common situation.

I think it’s the height of rudeness to ignore someone you’ve interviewed.

When I was recruiting it often took longer than two weeks to get it fully signed off to offer the post to our preferred candidate so clearly nobody would be notified before that. After that we did contact everyone who had interviewed.

Even an automated email so you know you're out of the process is better than nothing. They're effectively ghosting! I think it's a reflection on the company though, it's easy to say "you're better off without them" but they're probably not giving a great employee experience in the company, if they don't even thank you for your time and politely decline.

Hopefully it will be something like that! But there have been so many that have provided no update at all

I hate that when it happens. I had this M&S. I applied for a senior role. I had two round of interviews (including a case study) and I never heard back!!! So pissed off! Not for the role but for the fact that I spent my weekend preparing a case study presentation and they didn’t bother giving any feedback!

Given the company contacted you and asked you to apply, I do think they owe you a response.
It is entirely wrong for a company not go back to candidates after interview. I have however been in the situation of hiring for a role with no support from HR/recruitment, at a time when my job is was all-consuming. I’m
sorry to say that I simply didn’t manage to go back to the unsuccessful candidates. If someone had even sent me a standard legally approved couple of lines I could have used I might have done so, but I didn’t have the mental capacity to think these up for myself or the bandwidth to find everyone’s emails and send the messages. That unfortunately can be the reality in a big corporate role. At the time I was working 8.30 am to 11.30 pm several times a week.
