Worried about my 18 year old son buying joke shirts from Afflecks Palace

Hi everyone, I’m after some advice because I’m really not sure if I’m overreacting or not. My son is 18 and has started going into Manchester at weekends with his university mates. They’ve been spending time in Afflecks Palace, which I know is full of alternative stalls, but he came back yesterday with a couple of t-shirts from the shop on the top floor that does the t-shirt printing.
One of them says “Don’t bully me, I’ll cum” and the other was along similar lines with crude sexual humour. He thought they were hilarious and just a bit of edgy fun, but I’m honestly concerned. At 18 he’s an adult, yet these kinds of slogans seem to normalise really objectifying and inappropriate attitudes, especially towards women and sex. I’ve tried speaking to him about it calmly, explaining why it bothers me, but he just laughed it off and said it’s only a joke.
Has anyone else come across these sorts of shirts in Afflecks or had their own son or daughter bring something similar home? Am I making too much of it, or is this worth having a firmer conversation about? Any thoughts on how to approach it without it escalating would be really helpful. Thanks.

I think the youth are getting really tired of word policing and PC culture. They are into counter culture just like we were at our age. We all grow up with time.

Sort of agree with this but would say they're not 'getting' fed up of PC culture, I would say very few ever bought into the group think now about 'inappropriateness'.

I only ever see references on here, this forum only about young people, teens, young adults who are oh so earnest, think certain phrases or relationships are inappropriate, disapprove of anything that involves sexualised behaviour or raunchy, boisterous, aggressive behaviour (at times), being in the 'right' about politics, diversity, inclusion, 'be kind', not sleeping around, caring about the planet

Only on here do I hear about these unicorn teens who care so much and are such 'good' people.
They're teens, they think everything is funny.

I thought we had all agreed that their brains arent developed anyway so waht they do is a load of nonsense!!

It also said "Man I love Frogs" but that isn't what they were meaning, was it?

I have that shirt too! YABU. And afflecks is brilliant.

Nosleepforthismum · 14/05/2026 20:27

Oh OP. You’ve played this all wrong. You need to get your own collection of t-shirts from there, profess your love for them and wear them proudly in front of him and his GF. You are making the t-shirts too attractive by hating them!

Yep, their brains aren't developed unless it suits someone to paint them in a bad light or slap a label on them then, suddenly, they're "adults".

Truly mysterious.

SilverPink · 14/05/2026 20:28

This has to be an advert for Afflecks Palace surely. OP gets all irate ‘advertising’ t-shirts and suddenly business is up….

Oreosareawful · 14/05/2026 20:29

For goodness sake OP, you need to unclench!

Lovelanza · 14/05/2026 20:29

I can just vision you clutching your pearls. Please don't drag his girlfriend into your batshittyness😂

The minute you show you disapprove, the attraction to doing it increases x 1000.

My son wanted to buy a cannabis leaf hat at a festival last year I let him and just ignored it.

Edited

Youngest bought a Top Hat (aged 12)

You were lucky

He's 16 now and would probably kill for a tweed 3 piece suit

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 14/05/2026 20:30

Oh god I remember the lads at clubs I went to wore ‘Brittany sucks Christina swallows’ t shirts. There were immature boys

Stoneycold12 · 14/05/2026 20:31

I think the bullying slogan is really crass, and I would think that anyone wearing it was a tool. I don't think I'm a MILF, but I agree that it's sexist ageist, and sleezy.

While I'm not his target audience, does he really want people to judge him as being a bit of a dick - and most people, other than 18 year old boys, will think it's stupid.

They were silly pathetic boys. Hopefully they've grown up to respect women.

I genuinely hope he turns up one day in the VERY infamous CoF t shirt

showmethegin · 14/05/2026 20:33

This has got to be a joke. Trauma dumping? Stop doing that to your son. It’s just a stupid tshirt. Be grateful that is your only worry in life. Did you not wear anything stupid at that age? Unclench

And that day, he'll be wearing it in a homeless shelter, far away from home.

HasDepth · 14/05/2026 20:34

I am probably very stupid but who is going to be bullying him and he is coming sexually at who?

vanillachoc · 14/05/2026 20:35

as a 23 year old woman I can say I own one of these shirts 🤣

you need to get over yourself

also, MILF just means mum I’d like to fuxk. how is that ageist? I’m a mum and get called a milf all the time, so age doesn’t come into it!

My dad used to be their roadie..... I had some great shirts.

Funnily enough all the guys were pretty much tee total and generally really genuinely nice guys, apart from the short one, he was just a diva but I was always very well looked after by all of them as a young teen girl.

If you cant' see why that's demaning to you as a woman, you're a lost cause, i'm afraid.

Well they need to stop degrading women. Older women especially. We get enough of that from our husbands. "MIlf" and "Gilf" its a disgrace.

If you are getting enough of that from your husband I suggest that you take it up with him seeing as he is the one with the developed pre-frontal cortex.

Cerezo · 14/05/2026 20:37

Stop pearl clutching. He’ll cringe at himself later. You cringe at him now. But honestly get over yourself.

Fatiguedwithlife · 14/05/2026 20:38

I had a Barbie is a slut T-shirt in the nineties.
my mum probably hated it but isn’t 18 the perfect time to wear these T-shirts?
Unclench your pearls
