10,000 words was required for my undergrade thesis. It required research so essay only is much easier.
Best advice is break it into sections.
For example, imagine the title is "Are apples better for your health than oranges?"
Intro:
Purpose of the essay and outline the sections the essay will cover (1,000 words)
The benefits of oranges: (2,500 words)
Outline the benefits
Reference supporting articles and research (WHO, NHS, academic research articles etc)
Discuss the limitations and shortcomings of oranges
The benefits of apples: (2,500 words)
Same as above but just supporting arguemebts for apples
Alternative Views: (2,500)
- Better fruits like blueberries and bananas and their merits
- Why others argue vegatables are better
- why fruit alone is insufficent for good health, discuss exercise, mobility, balanced diet
Conclusion: (1,500)
Summarise the entire essay
Add you own view having research it all
Draw final conclusions
Try breaking your topic into similar section and it will really help with structuring and is easier to tackle it in parts.
Check what essay writing convention is required for the essay. The Harvard referencing system is on of the most common ones and there's multiple examples only. If stuck, I'll PM you a copy.
