Fitness tracker for teen

Dd 14 wants to count her steps, she has a phone but has to remain switched off at school.

Are Fitbits any good still? Or a basic Garmin? I have seen basic bands too with no display? Do your teens wear smart watches or fitness trackers? Are they allowed them at school?

I got an Amazfit watch earlier this year mainly to monitor heart rate and make sure I dont do too much (have ME) so not really what most people use it for but its been great, the app is easy to use and you can see patterns. Good battery life. Mine fits my very small wrists too so was very happy. I'm Android so double check its compatible.

I have a Fitbit Inspire, which does everything I need it to - steps, heart rate, distance, activity and sleep tracking etc. Synch it with the app every few days. I think the new Air will do similar but without a screen.

Not allowed at DTs school. Totally normal comp.

My DD14 had a Fitbit but kept forgetting to charge it up. She wears her Apple Watch to high school now and tracks her steps. No school policies about this.

What's their phone policy if they have one?

Me and DD have Fitbit. Her is a slim cheaper one, links to her phone for calls/messages and steps etc.

Does everything my bugger .ore expensive one does but is small for her slim wrist.

Charging lasts about a week whereas I believe other watches need charging almost daily.

Also bear in mind that you can’t replace the battery in an Apple Watch.

They can have their phones with them at school. Recently changed from being able to use them outside of lessons to having to have them put away all day. It stays in her bag (mostly).

Think DD has Inspire 3. She's in bed so I can't check now until tomorrow. It's waterproof too as she swims in it.

Are Apple Watches generally no longer permitted in most schools?

My daughter has my old fitbit inspire. Very basic but it counts steps and isn’t too bulky for her.

RollOnSunshine · 16/05/2026 19:50

What's the underlying reason for this? Walking around is pretty much the least effective method of losing weight or improving fitness.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 16/05/2026 20:39

I’d be cautious about encouraging this tbh, my dd started counting steps and it was linked to a developing eating disorder.

I ended up taking a hammer to that bloody watch 🙈
