Prime Minister Wes

Prime Minister Andy

Do they sound professional?

Tony Blair is "Tony" in the official list of Prime Ministers (https://www.gov.uk/government/history/past-prime-ministers) though his given name is actually Anthony (Charles Lynton) Blair.

PinkHairbrushClub · 13/05/2026 07:59

Well they would be Prime Minister Streeting and Prime Minister Burnham, and they can't help what their mother's called them. I don't really care what someone is called, I care what they do. I can't say I am convinced by any of them really.

Nor me. Might as well just stick with Keir!

sittingonabeach · 13/05/2026 08:01

Wes is officially Wesley

Tigerbalmshark · 13/05/2026 08:02

That really wouldn’t be my biggest concern about Wes Streeting getting into power!

Is “Prime Minister Nige” or “Prime Minister Zac” any better?

Thepeopleversuswork · 13/05/2026 08:02

Couldn’t care less if he or she was Prime Minister Sausage if they can’t sort out the current mess.

To be fair, Wes is actually Wesley, and Andy is actually Andrew, so Wes and Andy are the names they choose to go by.

But as above, Tony Blair chose to use a diminutive of his given name.

sittingonabeach · 13/05/2026 08:04

And Andy is officially Andrew

Prime Minister Nigel is the one I would be most worried about!

Sartre · 13/05/2026 08:04

Deputy PM Nick, PM Liz, PM Jim, PM Tony… If you want to be super pedantic, Boris is not his name.

Sartre · 13/05/2026 08:05

Tigerbalmshark · 13/05/2026 08:02

Same… Mandelson’s best mate “xx”

PutAGirdleRoundAboutTheEarthIn40Minutes · 13/05/2026 08:05

Boris isn’t even called Boris and nobody had issues with that.

Really, if their names are your main consideration of their suitability I hope you don’t have a vote in the leadership election.

As an aside, most commentators and sources in the government think Wes has blown his chances by not going for it yesterday and mounting a challenge. He apparently would find it hard to find 81 backers and is considered a spent force.

LaburnumAnagyroides · 13/05/2026 08:05

I don't give a fuck what the PM is called. I care whether they can lead, and whether they have the vision to do what is needed to get us back into Europe and get the economy turned round.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 13/05/2026 08:08

What are you implying by this (classist) thread? That prime ministerial aptitude should be based on the name someone’s parents gave them at birth?

DoYouLikeYourNaneFred · 13/05/2026 08:09

Surely Prime Minister Streeting or Burnham?

...like all the others before them. Including Johnson & Starmer.

or casually Wes or Andy. No different to Boris or Keir

maybe just Streeting or Burnham. Like Cameron or May??

Absolutely no different to any of the others

the absolute least of our fucking worries. Even if it was Candy Clown.

Chersfrozenface · 13/05/2026 08:10

Boris isn’t even called Boris and nobody had issues with that.

Yes he is - Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson. He goes by his second name, as did my father, my mother, my uncle, the lad in my son's class from our street, etc.

ServietteUnion · 13/05/2026 09:42

"Call me Dave"

DoggusDomesticus · 13/05/2026 09:45

Yes, people who go by a diminutive of their name make very poor leaders.

Is that really your point? 🥴

MrThorpeHazell · 13/05/2026 11:15

Burnham isn't even in the running. Can't meet the entry level requirement. And that's his own fault entirely - why on earth did he think becoming Mayor of Manchester was a shrewd move?????

It's been a long time since you've been happy then @LaburnumAnagyroides .

I know the feeling.

Politically, you would be correct. Which is why I got directly involved myself at a local level.

On a personal level, I am very happy!

BeardofHagrid · 13/05/2026 07:53

Prime Minister Wes

Prime Minister Andy

Do they sound professional?

It's unfortunate that politics now boils down to what names sounds best.

TheSmallAssassin · 13/05/2026 12:44

When do we ever refer to the Prime Minister that way? It's either Mrs X or Mr Y, Sir K, Firstname Secondname, or "the Prime Minister"

stuckdownahole · 13/05/2026 12:48

DoggusDomesticus · 13/05/2026 09:45

Ted Heath wasn't great to be fair

MrsShawnHatosy · 13/05/2026 12:50

Do you think Presidents Bill, Jimmy, Harry, Joe, sounded professional? Or Chancellor Willy?
