Endless decorating with family life.

Anyone else find decorating an endless activity? Moving stuff around to do it, fitting it in around work, not doing more fun things, but not wanting to pay a decorator (I find they are quick, but expensive and don't do a good job - thick coats of paint, dribbles, lumps and bumps).
Then the kids and/or partner bash things, get food, snot, dribble, blue tack or dirty fingers on it. Or run the shower so long the paint goes mouldy or bubbles, plus never opening a window so mould starts growing.
When you get to the end of the house you have to start again.

I'm not destined to have nice things am I?

AIBU to expect people to look after things so I don't need to decorate so often?

Surely you don't redecorate every time any damage occurs, though?

My approach is to just let the house fall to bits while the kids are here. They'll both be at uni/working in five years and then I'll redecorate. It'll still get bashed etc but not as much. In the meantime there really is no point in decorating.

I accept my house isn't going to be pristine and just get on with life. Even if grubby hands go on the walls I generally find a quick wipe with a damp cloth and it comes off. Can you buy a portable dehumidifier for your bathroom if the shower is causing that much trouble.

No, can't say this is a problem I have. Have you considered fitting an extractor fan in your bathroom? And buying scrubbable paint?

If you just have dings, put some of your paint into those touch up pens. Slobproof? Something like that. And then you just touch up the ding instead of repainting the whole wall.

What's going on in your house that you're constantly fully redecorating? Indoor braziers? Riots? ;)

You could ban blu tack for a start.

personally I found touching up better than repainting.

if you are getting mould that’s not a decorating issue.

Maybe you're too much of a perfectionist. Just leave it and go do something you enjoy. No one's ever died of a scuffed wall. (Unless it was that Victorian paint containing arsenic.)

aLFIESMA · 12/05/2026 12:10

I just use the same white (Dulux Timeless for example) then apart from the odd wallpapered wall everything is easily 'touched up' from a small jar of paint kept in the cupboard. And, when I get it out for one little job I can search for other scruffy bits and deal with 'em!
This may not be to your taste OP but I like it for ease now that I am older & less mobile. I think it would work for a busy family home too Smile

You need Johnstone acrylic durable paint. Its amazing. Pretty indestructible.

Stoicandhappy · 12/05/2026 12:14

I just use baby wipes…

You actually redecorate when kids make dirty fingerprints?

Nofeckingway · 12/05/2026 12:21

I understand OP . I know growing up we had much more respect for things in the home. Maybe because it wasn't as affordable to decorate or paint . I hate that DCs etc aren't more careful with things that are newly painted or replaced . My DS immediately messed up new paintwork by banging his bed and chair against the walls.

I keep a tiny tin of paint to hand. When I spot marks, I pour a bit into a saucer lined with foil, and use a scrunched up bit of kitchen paper to dab over the marks. Nothing to clean up after, just wrap the paper in the foil and throw away. Takes moments and keeps the place looking fresh for longer.
