To think that politicians that advocate for a high tax state are almost always hypocrites?

I think the idea of high levels of tax is attractive until you are the one actually have to pay it.

First Angela Rayner dodged a massive tax bill and now we find out Zack Polanski has also not paid the right amount of Council Tax.

How on earth do they have the guts to suggest that we all need to pay ever increasing amounts of tax and be severely punished for any avoidance or evasion? The hypocrisy stinks! Surely they should lead from the front and be volunteering to pay more tax?

Its not just politicians. Its everyone. Everyone is for a high tax state until that starts to become reality. My most lefty middle friend who loved to proclaim how she was more left wing than anyone she knew, how she was the only person she knew who wanted to pay more tax, has been absolutely furious on the occasions where she did have to pay more, or would lose benefits ( such as child benefit) and got her accountant to come up with a legal wheeze so she did not lose out. Even that hasn't changed her self-view of being an uber lefty who wants to pay more tax 🙄

Polanski has also spent the past week lying about it. Scumbag.

People who advocate for high tax in general are a bit thick and short of imagination and ideas.

And they are always hypocrites. Always.

Tax is important. And everyone has to pay it. But getting the minority of people to pay the majority of it is cognitive dissonance.

The left like to say ‘oh let the rich leave’. And then they do leave, the they cry and wail and make excuses for driving the country to the wall.

How stupid to do you have to be to literally drive people away who find the system. Surely, you want more of them so you have more money.

Agree, it’s not specific to politicians. Almost without exception (eg: JK Rowling, Ricky Gervais being notable exceptions) the people who advocate for it, when asked, generally think it should be someone else actually paying it, never them.

I wonder with Zach and Angela whether their 'mistakes' were partially driven by the fact that the taxes feel very punitive (because they are!).

So Angela basically didn't pay the right amount of Stamp Duty because it was classed as a second home. I genuinely think she probably didn't view it as a second home though for the reasons she has outlined. What she has of course highlighted is that a great many people stuck paying these super high taxes often aren't really the type of people that are targeted by a tax. So the parents of SEN children stuck paying VAT on school fees because they have been failed by the state sector. People with negative equity that can't afford to sell becoming accidental landlords and being hit by loads of extra costs and duties.
