To think it’s unfair to compare me to colleagues with years more experience?

I started a role at the same time as 8 other people. It’s a corporate job where “years of experience” count for a lot and it’s a hierarchical structure.

Of the 8 people brought on the same time as me, 7 of them had experience in the field of at least 12 months, some had 30 months experience. We all are the same level. I was the only selected with no prior experience.

To say it’s been a sharp learning curve is an understatement. Then to top it off, they extended my probation as I was not performing to the same standard as the other people of my level. Apparently more senior people would rather work with the others as they require less hand holding and checking of work products than me.

I understand this, it’s logical, but AIBU to think its deeply unfair to penalise someone for not having enough experience for the role if they knew this when offering the job?

The problem is though if your not meeting the expected level it will lead to more work for everyone else.

how long have you been there ?

I don't understand - how have they penalised you?

They've given you a chance at the role, despite you having no experience, and now they are giving you a chance to get up to the same standard as the others, by extending your probation, rather than just telling you that it hasn't worked out and letting you go.

Do you have professional registration in the area, would you he expected to hit the ground running?

But it’s the reason for probation extension

They shouldn’t be saying “other people can do this better than you so we’re extending your probation”. They should be saying “these are the requirements of the role and you are not yet meeting XY and Z”

Don’t focus on that comment about being compared to others. Learn from them if you can, maybe bring up the comment to whoever made it/someone in authority if you want to but ultimately you should be measured against the role expectations, not compared to others in role.

To be honest, you are quite lucky to come in on the same level as people who have, in some cases, 2 or more years experience than you. I would expect them to be on a higher grade and higher pay than someone who had never done the job.

I think all you can do is be grateful for the extended probation and try to put in some extra time getting yourself up to speed.

Sorry is this your years more experience? the 8 people brought on, 7 of them had experience in the field of at least 12 months, some had 30 months experience. 1 year and 2.5 years?
