You need to apply a bleach solution the paint over with a product like Kilz then re-paint the area.

Definitely use a very large plastic drop cloth below when doing this.

White vinegar kills the spores and won’t damage fabrics if it drips

I had it on our bathroom ceiling before. I got one of those extendable squeegee sponge mop things, sprayed mould remover on the sponge and used that to wipe it across the ceiling. It hasn’t come back since then and unless you spray too much onto the sponge it won’t drip.

We use a half white vinegar half water spray . Leave for 30 mins then wash off . The vinegar is supposed to kill the mould

pizzaHeart · 10/05/2026 21:29

Vinegar. Buy vinegar spray (mine from Home bargains), spray until the place is wet, wipe a bit so it’s not dripping and leave it for a few hours, then wipe again. Do it several times, then paint with anti mould paint. Don’t dilute vinegar, use it like it is.

Finding the source would be most sensible.

I have just used this product on our ensuite bathroom ceiling. I applied with a roller, but I think I would spray directly next time. Wore protective glasses. The mould ‘disappeared’ within 5 mins, wiped it down and applied the second product which helps stop it coming back.
Very easy, but strong smelling, and you should use a protective plastic sheet in case there are any drips and ventilate well.

And I agree - try and find the cause. Mine was a teenager who forgets to open the window after taking long showers, coupled with the extractor fan needing a good clean.

Also ventilation. Opening a window for a couple of hours

I have, it was a blocked, leaking gutter 🤦

Thanks for the tips though 🙂
