To ask for tips for visiting Budapest?

Posting here for traffic because I’m feeling a bit anxious and overwhelmed about being the planner for once!

I’m visiting Budapest for the first time at the end of June with DH. It’s a surprise for him for him and he’s usually the planner for trips away so want to try and get a few activities planned for us to do and get ideas of must see/do things whilst there.

We’ll be there from Thursday to Sunday so have a few days and nights to explore. I’d love some recommendations of places to visit, eat, drink and and any tips for getting around and having a good time.

Thanks in advance!

Loved Budapest! I've only been once and we had a 6mo at the time. It's very pedestrian, even with a pram, really easy to get around. Buda is on one side of the river, Pest on the other. Buda is the chilled historic bit, Pest is busier and more nightlife etc. Think we stayed in Pest and it wasn't noisy at night or anything.

Try the Langos (s is pronounced sh in Hungarian) but you may want to split one, they're very heavy!

Also chimney cake, we split one as it was huge.

Go to some warm baths if you've not got kids with you!

Hungarians were so friendly, it felt really safe and lots of great restaurants. There was one great one that was farm to table I can't remember the name of but just in case it comes up if you googled. Sorry not to be more useful! We weren't there long before going to a wedding.

Definitely spend half a day at a spa. We loved this one

My tip - do NOT try the local traditional drink called unicum. It comes in a bottle that looks like baby bio (or always used to) and tastes what I imagine baby bio to taste like!
The thermal spa is great - the famous one is hotel gellert, but there are others.

And Buda castle is lovely to visit. As is the massive indoor market - great place to get some local food cheaply.

Fisherman's Bastion in Buda Castle District is worth visiting - it is very pretty.
We went for afternoon tea in the New York Cafe - it is supposed to be the most beautiful cafe in the world. It was lovely, great food and piano player and a band.
Twentysix restaurant was lovely too - indoor plants everywhere!
We went to the Szechenyi baths which I expected to love but didn't. The outside area was nice but the inside saunas/plunge pools were too busy to enjoy.
A night-time boat ride on the Danube was great.
We visited the shoes on the river. They are a memorial and a monument to the Hungarian Jews who, in the winter of 1944-1945, were shot on the banks of the Danube River by the members of the Arrow Cross Party.

Budapest is beautiful and we felt safe on our trip there. Enjoy your trip.

Thank you all so much.

I've booked a sunset boat trip which I’m really looking forward to and I’ve just booked a day at a thermal spa.

DH is a proper foodie so he’ll be excited to try the local dishes. I’ll just be happy with some beer!

We loved Budapest. They have these tiny little bronze statues dotted all over the city which are fun to find. If you search ‘kolodko’ on Google maps lots should pop up. We did a street art tour which was really good and one of the sunset cruises.
As prev poster said definitely try the langos and we really enjoyed a restaurant called gettó gulyas but need to book. Have a lovely time!

SparkysMagicPiano · 11/05/2026 16:36

Agree with @Topbird29 - give the Unicum a miss, it's vile.

Fraughtmum · 11/05/2026 16:46

Go to the park where they have all the old Sovirt soviet statues. Its a taxi ride away. Highlight of our trip!

Fraughtmum · 11/05/2026 16:48

Its called Memento Park. Also House of Terror museum which we did before walking up to the baths

Try palinka instead

Can anyone please give a rough idea of how much you think we’ll need to take to spend? Accommodation and transports are sorted and I’ll get a pass for us to travel around but we’ll more than likely walk as much as possible. I’m wondering if £1500 will be enough for the two of us for thurs-Sun?
We’re not in to fancy restaurants, he will love street food and for night time we’d probably do a few drinks out and then enjoy some wine on our balcony. We’re staying in an Airbnb so can shop for breakfast and snacks.
